Goodbye Old Friends
"Give it up..."
"Give it up..."
"Just give it up already!"
"Give it up! Give it up! Give it up! This won't change anything! Do you really think killing someone just because they called you a few horrible names is the right thing to do? No, it's not! This isn't you, Mandy! It's not you!"
"Shut up, shut up, shut up!" Mad Hatter shouted, throwing a kitchen knife at the wall in blind rage. "Shut up...just shut up! You don't know anything about me, so don't try pretending you understand! That freak has done more to me than call me names; she pushed me, kicked me and threw me about as if I were nothing but a toy! Getting rid of her...will help me forget. I just want to forget. Can't you understand that?"
"There will only be more blood on your hands. And you know the rules of the ALICE Program, revenge killings are not permitted. If they find out about this they'll kick you off the program an expose you to the police! Is that really what you want?" her conscious said to in a desperate attempt to make the killer rethink her actions. Mad Hatter chuckled, insanity glimmering in her eyes.
"I've killed so many people over the years, so many to save the world from destruction. What makes this any different? So what if I cut the breaks to a car so it would drive over a bridge...so what if I coated an entire house in gasoline and watched it burn? So damn what?"
"Are you hearing yourself? You murdered two girls, Amanda! Two girls who had turned their lives around! They had good jobs, a good reputation- one of them was engaged to be married! They had everything and you took that away from them! How...how could you!?"
Mad Hatter laughed, smirking. "It was easy. All I had to do was let my anger tip me over the edge. There's no coming back from this, I know that. Though why would I want to go back? This sense of power...it's amazing! I love having power over my actions, over other people! One pull of a trigger and bam, there goes someone else's brain. White and Blue should never have accepted me, taken me under their wings. They should have known what I was going to become. That's the whole reason I joined the ALICE Program, it was for power. Nothing else."
Mad Hatter removed her knife from the wall, going back to peeling and chopping onions. She was making herself a chicken salad with onion pickle, a favourite of hers she indulged in when she went over to Vietnam to complete an assignment. The chicken cooked in a traditional dressing, the onions soaked in water beforehand to prevent tears streaming down the woman's face. There was something about her, something that made her go on with life as normal as if she hadn't pulled any triggers or slashed throats. It was that constant way of thinking that made the Mad Hatter blend in with society, made no one suspect that she was, in fact, a cold-hearted murderer with a goal to rid the world of evil.
After letting the onions soak in the pickle sauce, Mad Hatter was greeted by a knock at the door. Washing her hands and brushing her ponytail back, she assumed it was the landlady checking on how she was doing like she usually did. Instead, when she opened the door she was surprised to see her two friends.
"Kev! Jamie!" she said happily, hugging the two males. "It's so good to see you! What are you doing here? I thought you were off on an assignment?"
White Rabbit shook his head. "We finished it earlier than planned, so we decided to use the downtime to come and visit you." he lied. "How you doing, babe?"
"I'm great." Mad Hatter smiled, inviting her amigos inside. "Come on in, you two."
Mad Hatter closed the door after her and let her guests get comfortable. Blue Caterpillar was sitting on the sofa, as was White Rabbit.
"I was just making myself some lunch, but do you guys want anything?" she asked, browsing through the cupboards. "I got some of that tea you both were raving about back at the base."
"That'd be great," Blue Caterpillar grinned. "Thanks, Mads."
Mad Hatter got on with preparing the cups of tea, something telling her that her two 'friends' were here for more than just a simple visit. Paranoia setting in, she looked through the cupboards once again and took out a small bottle of clear liquid. This was used primarily for emergencies, and she saw this as an emergency. A threat even.
Putting the correct dosage into each cup, Mad Hatter put it on the counter and went over to White Rabbit and Blue Caterpillar. The fluid didn't take effect right away; it would take a few sips until it entered the person's bloodstream.
"So how did your assignment go, Mandy?" Blue Caterpillar asked, gently blowing the surface of the tea so it would cool down. He had no idea he wasn't going to be leaving the apartment alive, completely unaware he was never going to see his wife again and unborn child grow into the best they possibly could be.
"Same old, same old." Mad Hatter replied, casually. "Not much happened if I'm being completely honest, it didn't take me long to blow the guy's brains out and then get rid of the evidence. The program is covering for me anyway, so it's not like I need to worry."
"Quick and swift as always." White Rabbit remarked, drinking some of his tea. "Guess there's not really much to say other than well done, you successfully completed another assignment. Keep this up and you'll be the best there is."
"She's already the best, Kev." Blue Caterpillar put his arm around Mad Hatter. "Our little darling's going places, she's gonna get herself mentioned on the program's wall of fame. Not that you're not already famous, Mads."
Mad Hatter giggled. If there was one thing she was going to miss about Blue Caterpillar, it was going to be his charming and happy persona. He was a good man outside of work; she could admire that much about him. Now White Rabbit, now she was going to miss seeing his handsome face every time she went back to the base. Although a little too old for her, she couldn't lie and say he wasn't a total hunk when he was hot like the desert sun. Maybe she had a thing for slightly strange looking men? Who knows, she thought.
The three conversed for a few hours or so after the assassin had eaten her lunch. It was nice, being able to catch up and just act normal for a change. But Mad Hatter knew it wasn't going to last, everything was going to fall into place and she was having no second thoughts. Eventually, it was only her left in the room, well, White Caterpillar and Blue Caterpillar were with her, but they were lying on the floor, lifeless and limp. They had been unable to identify the poison had gotten into their system before it was too late, and now the little devil herself was whisking them away in her car to dispose of them.
Tear stains marked her cheeks as she lit the match and watched them burn, holding the small stick until it reached the bottom and the flame died. She walked away, going back into her car and driving home. Her home looked normal as if nothing had happened. She sighed, turning on the TV and watching the screen, laughing over the sitcom laughter.
Back to work, Mandy. Back to work.

"They're dead..." Danika watched the news, shocked. "They're both dead...who could do something like this, Dashi?"
"I don't know, sweetie, I really don't." Tadashi had some idea, but he didn't wish to send panic throughout the entire house. Cass was watching with shock as well, as was Hiro.
"Whoever did this to them, they're a total sicko," Cass said, Hiro agreeing with his aunt with a nod. There had been many murders in San Fransokyo over the years, so nothing really surprised anyone anymore, though this...this sent chills down the spines of everyone who viewed the daily news that particular morning. Tadashi hadn't responded to his numerous texts, too remorseful for what he had said to White Rabbit and Blue Caterpillar before their passing.
"If I had just...maybe they would still be alive. I should have accepted their offer, and now they're gone. What am I gonna do? What are we gonna do?"
