Her pencil tapping against the table, she's super anxious. Super excited, and super happy. For one, exam week is over. Secondly, winter break starts this weekend.
Her one hand played with the end of her braids, as she listen to professor McHenry lecture on. He tried to lighten up the mood, with small jokes here and there, but nobody cared to entertain them.
Denise sighed slightly.
Professor McHenry paused, and glanced at his laptop. "Class is dismissed." He says.
Just as everyone begins to gather their belongings, some making a sprint towards the door. Professor McHenry glances up.
"Denise, a word please?"
She grabs her purse, tossing her pencil inside before cautiously walking towards his desk.
"How are you, today?" He asks, with a slight smile.
"Fine?" She says, in a tone of question. Totally not intentional!
"Ah, okay." He says, typing away on his lap top. He then clasps his hands together and looks to her. "I've been reviewing your writing assignments and I must say, your writing style is very unique."
"Aw, thank you!" Denise holds her hand over her chest. "It means a lot."
He chuckles. "Which is why I am recommending you for a writing scholarship." He barely gets his sentence out before Denise started squealing. "I can email you the details, but I hope you know that means you have to maintain your GPA. It's to my understanding that you tend to struggle sometimes."
"No, I mean yes! I was struggling but, I've been improving a lot this year. Thank you so much Professor McHenry this means a lot." She smiles hard.
"No problem, so I'll be emailing you." He gazes up at her, as she's just lost with excitement...
"So! I'm being recommended for this scholarship! And honestly I think I decided what I want to major in!" Denise exclaims.
The foursome were all in the boys' dorm room. It's their last Friday together for a little while.
"I'm going to be an English Major, I don't know. But I feel like writing is my calling... You know?" She coos, as she glances over at Rodney packing his duffle bag with endless hoodies, and pants.
"I think you'll excel in it." Gina smiles, she sits on Kendrick's bed. Swinging her feet back and forth, she glances at him waltz into the bathroom.
"Yeah, thanks! Honestly I feel like everything is just taking its natural course." Denise says.
"That's good..." Rodney murmurs. He zips up his duffle bag, before tossing it on the floor.
"You're leaving tonight?" Gina asks.
"Nope, first thing tomorrow morning." He says, happily. "So ready to get the fuck away from here."
They share a laugh.
Denise paces around the room, unable to contain her excitement for the new opportunities heading her way."I'm leaving tomorrow too—"
"But you haven't even packed yet." Gina interrupts.
"Cause I'm leaving in like the afternoon, and besides I'm not gonna' rush. I literally just have to drive up the street verses Rodney. He's like how many states away?"
Gina murmurs "true" and shrugs. "You guys are lucky; I have a meet tomorrow so I have to stay."
"Oh yeah, good luck on that." Rodney encourages. "So you not going home for the break?"
