"joshua i feel bad," tyler said as they walked down the street.
"why, baby?"
"because we passed that homeless lady and we didn't give her anything. she even told us we were the cutest couple she'd ever seen!"
"it's ok, ty."
"i'm going back," tyler said.
and so tyler headed back to the kind homeless woman, but before he reached her, he purchased two ice cream cones.
he then relocated her, sitting down next to her and smiling as he handed her the ice cream.
she smiled widely. "oh, honey, you didn't have to do that," she said.
tyler smiled and shrugged. "i like helping people."
"i'm linda, by the way," the lady smiled, extending her hand.
"i'm tyler," the boy grinned, shaking her hand.
"so is he your boyfriend?" she asked with a smile, pointing towards an approaching josh.
"fiancé, actually," tyler grinned. it still felt surreal.
the lady smiled widely. "oh, goodness! that's wonderful! how did you meet??"
"a car crash, actually. he uh... he totaled my car on the highway and it was just kind of love at first sight," tyler smiled.
"wow! haven't heard that one before," linda grinned.
tyler laughed and shrugged. "not many have, i suppose."
"and here he is," tyler grinned as his fiancé reached them. tyler grabbed josh's hand and tugged, signaling he wanted him to join them. "this is my fiancé, joshua."
"hi," josh smiled, shaking the lady's hand.
"i'm linda. nice to meet you, joshua. you got quite lucky with tyler here," she grinned, gesturing to the boy.
tyler smiled and blushed.
"i really did, didn't i?" josh grinned, looking at his fiancé with love in his eyes and kissing his cheek. "he's amazing, isn't he?"
"joshua william! not here, not now!" tyler said embarrassedly.
linda and josh both laughed. "he's only speaking the truth, tyler," linda smiled.
josh grinned and nodded in agreement. "maybe if you weren't so sweet 'n beautiful i wouldn't have to talk about you all the time!"
the couple stayed and talked with linda for about an hour, tyler giving her $50 before they said their goodbyes. "here you go, miss linda!" tyler said happily. "you should treat yourself sometime. you deserve it," he grinned sweetly.
"aww, honey, that's too sweet. thank you," she said gratefully. "i wish you two the best of luck on your marriage! come see me again sometime."
tyler smiled and nodded. "we will, miss linda. i promise. but for now, take care of yourself, yeah?"
linda smiled and nodded. tyler hugged her goodbye and started walking, but the lady caught joshua by the arm, handing him the $50 back. "you go buy that sweet boy anything he wants, ok? treat him well."
josh smiled but shook his head, handing her the money back. "i promise you, tonight i will buy him absolutely anything he wants, but what he wants more than anything is for you to have the money."
"no, joshua. what he wants more than anything is you. he doesn't think he's beautiful inside or out, i can see it in his eyes. do something to make him believe that, ok?"
josh smiled and nodded. "yes ma'am. i will. if you ever need anything, call us," josh grinned, writing down his and tyler's numbers on a piece of paper and handing it to her.
linda smiled and nodded. "i will, honey. thank you for everything. it's been the best day for me in quite a while getting to talk to you two. tell tyler i send my thank you's as well."
"yes ma'am. we'll see you around. hopefully he'll be tyler joseph-dun by then," josh grinned, hugging the woman tightly before running to catch up with tyler, wrapping his arm around his shoulders and pressing a big kiss against his cheek, making linda smile.
"two happy boys," she said to herself with a grin. "life better treat them well."
***
"you're the sweetest boy alive, you know that, tyler?" joshua grinned as they cuddled in bed.
"why would you say that when you're alive?" tyler smiled up at him, kissing the base of his jaw.
"oh, please, honey. i would have never gone and talked to linda if you hadn't first."
tyler shrugged. "i mean, she's a person just like the rest of us. and you heard her story. she doesn't have any family. so if i could make her smile just once, i'd say that's an accomplishment."
josh smiled. how did he end up with such a perfect boy?
"i love you, tyler."
"i love you too, joshua."
just as tyler was about to fall asleep, he heard his boyfriend's voice.
"baby?"
"yes?" tyler responded sleepily.
"do you believe you're beautiful?"
tyler sighed, not even bothering to respond. he hated when people told him he was beautiful. he didn't believe it!
"you're beautiful inside and out, ty. i can't decide which one is more prominent. that's part of why i'm marrying you, tyler. because you're just so damn beautiful and i want to prove that to you. all because i love you."
tyler nodded and sniffled, holding tightly onto his fiancé as they laid in bed.
"i love you, beautiful."
"love you too," tyler said quietly.
josh kissed the top of tyler's head, running his fingers through his soft brown hair. "i'll get you to see that some day, tyler joseph. i promise you that."
