"what?! josh, no, y-you can't leave me for a week!" tyler cried, looking up at his husband.
"i'm so sorry, baby, just i have to for work," josh said. he felt terrible for leaving his husband for that long, knowing how sad tyler could get without him.
tyler cried softly, looking down at his lap as he sniffled.
"baby..." josh said, sitting down on the bed next to his husband and pulling him into his lap. tyler cried into josh's shoulder, josh rubbing his husband's back softly. "shhh, honey. it's ok. we can call every single night."
tyler continued to cry, hugging his husband tightly.
"i'm sorry, baby. i wouldn't go if it wasn't mandatory. you know that," josh said, kissing his husband's shoulder.
tyler sniffled and nodded, pulling back and looking at his husband's face, only to end up crying harder.
"i'll miss you so much, baby. i promise we'll go out on as many dates as you want when we get back," josh said.
see, for any couple, a week apart wouldn't be that big of a deal. but for tyler, it was awful. doing things together was incredibly important to him, and josh knew that, which is why he felt so terrible for leaving even though it wasn't his choice.
"and we'll kiss and hug and snuggle and make love and we'll eat ice cream in our boxers and we'll watch movies and all the other stuff you love," josh said. "promise, baby."
tyler sniffled and nodded, wiping his eyes before crawling into bed, josh cuddling him closely.
two days later
"i'll be back next saturday, ok, honey? i love you more than anything. don't have too much fun without me," josh said, kissing his husband's forehead as he hugged his waist.
"i-i love you too."
"i'll see you then. i'll be back before you know it."
"o-ok."
josh sighed and set his bag down, turning his one-arm hug into a two-arm hug. "i love you, tyler."
tyler sniffled as he buried his face in his husband's chest. "i-i love you t-too."
they had one final goodbye kiss and joshua was off to the airport.
this was going to be the worst seven days ever.
day two of the trip
tyler sat on the edge of the bed, his leg bouncing up and down nervously as the phone rang. joshua hadn't called or texted him in two days, and he started to get worried.
"maybe he's just busy," tyler told himself.
busy.
busy doing what?
day three of the trip
"josh? c-can you p-please call me back? i-i'm really worried. y-you said you would call me every night b-but you haven't even texted a-and i don't know what to do. p-please just call me back. i-i love you."
day four of the trip
"he forgot about me," tyler told himself. "he went away and he'll never come back."
he didn't know what to do. the only thing he loved forgot about him. the boy who his world revolved around was never coming back. the boy who was his first kiss, his first time, his first love, his first everything, was gone.
tyler stopped eating. he didn't get out of bed. instead he laid in the dark room he shared with the love of his life, staring up at the ceiling fan, voicing all the lovely memories he shared with the boy who shared his last name.
the day josh got back
"ty?!" josh called frantically through the house. "tyler?! tyler, baby, i'm home!" he searched high and low for his husband, eventually finding him in their room.
he looked more dead than alive.
"oh, tyler..." josh said, rushing to his side. "baby i'm so sorry..."
"y-you said you w-were gonna call m-me every night t-to tell me you love me b-but y-you didn't," tyler cried.josh sighed, sitting next to his husband and gently running his fingers through tyler's hair. "i know, baby. i know. my phone got stolen at the airport and i didn't get it back until i was boarding my flight earlier. i'm so, so sorry, baby."
tyler just continued his crying, burying his face in his pillow.
"when's the last time you ate?" josh asked carefully, gently running his hand up and down his husband's back.
"t-tuesday..."
josh's eyes widened. three days.
"i'm gonna go get you something to eat, ok?" he then remembered why his husband was in the state he was in. "or would you rather me stay in here with you?"
tyler sniffled. "s-stay."
josh nodded, kissing the back of tyler's head before slipping off his shoes and crawling into bed with him. "i'm so sorry i didn't call, baby..."
"i-i thought you f-forgot about me."
"oh, ty... how could i forget about the love of my life? the boy that's the only reason i wake up in the morning? the boy that was my first kiss? the boy that i lost my virginity to? the boy that makes me laugh until i can barely breathe? the boy that's so sweet he barely thinks about his beautiful, amazing self?"
tyler sniffled, finally turning around so josh could see his face.
even with the bags under his eyes and the ghost-like tone of his skin, he was still beautiful.
"w-will you please hold my hand?" tyler asked quietly.
josh smiled and nodded, sliding his hand into tyler's and kissing it. "i missed not being able to hold your hand while i walk around. it was weird talking about you but you weren't there."
"w-who did you talk t-to about me?"
"everyone. absolutely everyone at the conference. i said i had the most beautiful boy back at home. the tall, thin boy with tan skin, brown fluffy hair, chocolate eyes that are almost too easy to get lost in. the boy whose lips are just too kissable. the boy whose personality attracts absolutely everyone he's around, but i'm lucky enough to get special attention from him sometimes," josh smiled, squeezing tyler's hand.
tyler smiled shyly and sniffled, looking down in the fashion josh found absolutely adorable.
"how about we get you something to eat then snuggle on the couch? maybe kiss a lil bit," josh giggled.
tyler smiled and nodded. "c-can we kiss a lot?"
josh grinned and giggled, nodding his head and picking his husband up. "you betcha."
