When your boyfriend of nearly one year invited you over on a Tuesday evening at six o'clock, you assumed it was to eat some Thai and study for midterms that were quickly approaching. But when you walked into the apartment, you were thrown into what you could only assume was a fall festival.
The table and floor were covered in newspaper. Pumpkin carving tools were scattered around the table top, and three fall scented candles taken from May's bookshelf were placed at the center of the table. And, at the end of each side, were two giant pumpkins.
"What do you think?" Peter asked. The smile on his face couldn't be bigger, and the hopeful gleam in his eyes couldn't shine brighter.
"Peter," you said, shaking your head. "I thought we were going to study."
"Well, we can, but let's do this first," he said. "Come on, I picked the perfect pumpkin for you."
"But my test," you said, frowning. "Can't we do this this weekend? The test is over half of our grade. I don't want to flunk it-"
"You won't," he assured you. He put his hands on a pumpkin and sighed. "___, come on, it's our first Halloween together! I want to carve pumpkins with you and everything."
"Well, that's sweet, but-"
"___," he whined like a child.
"Let's study for a while, okay? Then we can carve them." You nodded until Peter sighed and nodded too. "Good. Come on, I have a lot I need to work on."
Forty minutes later, Peter sat on his bed, an open (and ignored) textbook on his lap. You were at his desk, highlighting notes. He groaned for the umpteenth time.
"What'd you get for number six on last week's study guide? I missed it and I can't figure out why," you said, ignoring his groans.
"I don't remember," he declared. He slammed his book shut and tossed to the side. "Babe, can't we carve pumpkins now?"
You glanced at him briefly. "I want to study-"
"Babe, come on!" He stood up, arms flailing at his sides like a child. "Aunt May will be home from work in an hour and she's gonna want us to clean off the table for dinner."
