You were so excited as you hurried out of Midtown High, gripping Peter's hand tight. He looked at you and grinned, the smile so wide that it made his eyes squint. That sent your heart into a frenzy. As you both stepped onto the sidewalk, he let go of your hand for a brief moment to take your backpack off your back and hold it under his arm. Your heart went crazy again
It was Friday (finally) and Peter was fulfilling his promise of taking you out on a date instead of doing Spider-Man duties. He had been talking about it all day, about the "big surprises" he had in store for you.
And now you were walking to only Peter knows where, hand in hand with the boy that wouldn't stop staring at you with love in his eyes.
"You're gonna love this," he said, grinning at the street ahead.
You eyed him suspiciously. "Will I?"
"Yes."
"You're not going to, like, take me to an alley and murder me, are you? So you'll finally get of that nagging girlfriend that prevents you from getting with the really hot girls?" you joked.
"What? No!" He gave you a funny look. "What the heck. You're hot, babe."
"I know," you said, still joking, and he snickered.
"I love you," he said, and he stopped at the front of a restaurant. It was an all you can eat buffet, and at the sight of your growing smile, he beamed. "Told you... this isn't it, by the way."
It was no secret that you loved food. You loved trying new things and always are the most candy at the movies - just because it made you happy. And Peter had taken you to a buffet.
"Oh my gosh, I'm going to eat my weight in chicken," you said.
He laughed.
Once seated, you ordered a glass of your favorite drink and Peter got water. You both went to the buffet separately, meeting back up at the table with plates stacked with food.
Your pile of food was the same size - if not bigger than - Peter's. As you cut into a roll and gathered some butter out of a packet on it, he took a bite of fried apples. You bit into your roll and then cut into a piece of fried chicken. Peter was finished with his apples (he was a fast eater) and began to work on a bowl of noodles.
"So," you said, "what's next?"
"That would ruin the surprise," he told you, sipping down some water. "But you'll love it. I'm so excited. And I'm glad we have today, too." He took another bite, chewed, and looked at you. "I've really missed you, gorgeous."
"Pete," you said, but you were drowned out by a loud giggle.
You looked at the girl at the table next to you. She was small and pretty, a cute boy across from her. They looked very much in love, and he had a plate of lobster in front of him, and she had a salad, a tiny bowl of noodles at the side.
And she was skinny. So skinny. And you were suddenly aware of the difference of her plate and yours. She was eating slowly, as if she was trying to make a point to the boy she was with. And you had a plate full of junk, which made a different point altogether.
You swallowed a bite of greasy chicken, feeling your stomach turn. You looked down. Was it obvious that you were a little soft there? You stared at your shirt, watching your belly press up against it with every breath. You could. Just barely, but you could. Oh gosh. You should have worn loose clothes. A sweatshirt, maybe, to hide how embarrassing-
"Hey, babe," Peter said, and you looked up at him, face reddening, and saw his eyebrows pulled together. "What's wrong? Why aren't you eating anymore?"
"Um," you said, thoughts tripping over each other. "Um. I'm f-full, I think." You put your fork down and wiped grease off your fingers before placing them on your lap. You couldn't help but look over at that skinny girl again.
Meanwhile, Peter was still staring at you. He couldn't understand why you had stopped eating until he followed your gaze and saw the thin girl popping a couple of carrots into her mouth, chewing slowly, and washing them down with a swig of water. Suddenly he understood why the second piece of fried chicken on your plate was still untouched.
He looked back at you and sighed sadly. "___," he started, feeling a lecture forming. But it all melted away when he looked at you, and all he needed to do was lean over, take your hand, rub his thumb across your knuckles, and smile. "Babe. You're so gorgeous." He shook his head, truth spilling out now. "I can't believe you're mine."
Your eyes widened and then you smiled. You looked back at the girl and he brushed this thumb across your knuckles again, bringing you back to him.
He didn't say anything else, just looked at you, and that was enough. You knew he loved you, and when he looked at you like that, it reminded you just how much.
You picked up your fork again. He smiled gratefully and took a bite of his food, then jerked his chin towards the dessert line.
"They just put a chocolate cake out on the buffet," he said. You turned your head and saw the giant circle cake, decorated in cheesy red roses, cute into six giant slices. You looked back at Peter with wide eyes and smiled.
He shot up. "I'll go get us some," he said. He paused on his way over, leaned down, and kissed the top of your head, before running off towards the buffet, clean plate in hands.
You looked at your plate and gave a grateful smile. Peter loved you.
It was a good feeling.
