It's been two years since the death of my mother. The police were never able to find out who killed her which caused the case to run cold. The only thing that they said about it was that it was an animal attack. Which still confuses me to this day? How would an animal get into the house when there was no force of entry? After that I was put into the system since I didn't have any other family members. It was always my mother and me. Never met my father since he died before I was born. I was all alone in this world but some higher power took pity on me and I was adopted by a couple who couldn't have any kids of their own. I don't know why they wanted a teenager but I was glad to be adopted. So here I am now, at fifteen who still have a lot to see what the world has to offer is now moving to a small town called Deadwood. We pulled up to a two story brick house with a big porch in the front.
"Home sweet home." Mom said. My new mom, Ella, is a doctor while my dad, Michael is a lawyer. Basically my parents are rich. Getting out of the car, I followed them into the house. I guess it was okay, it wasn't too big or upscale. Which is ironic, because they can pretty much afford any kind of house they wanted that was bigger than this. I guess they don't like material things.
" What do you think Gabriella?" Dad says.
"It's fine I guess, I still don't know why we had to move. I liked the school I was in."
"I'm sorry Gabriella, but the hospital in town gave me the position to be chief of staff. I couldn't pass it up." Mom said.
"I know mom and I'm happy for you." I said with a smile that wasn't reaching my eyes. I went upstairs to find a room that I could call my own. The room I found was huge with its own bathroom and walk-in closet. The room was facing the window which let in natural light which was good. The walls were green which definitely had to change, hard wood floors so I guess it'll do.
"You found a room I see. It could use a fresh coat of paint." Dad said.
" Does this mean you'll be painting this weekend?" I said with a smirk on my face.
" No, there's no I in team." Dad said.
" So this is where my two favorite people are hiding." Mom said.
"We are not hiding, we were just talking about how my room needs a fresh coat of paint. This green has to go." I said.
" But it matches your eyes." Mom said. I was born with green eyes instead of my real mom brown eyes but I got her black hair, and olive skin. I had more curves than most girls my age so in school I was always picked on for being fat which I wasn't. It just makes the other girls feel good about themselves. My adoptive parents were married for ten years and they still act like they're teenagers. Ella has brown hair, brown eyes, shorter than dad, kind but she will get serious when she has to. My dad Michael likes to work out in his spare time so he's well built, tall, blonde hair, blue eyes.
"Well these boxes aren't going to move themselves." Mom said, patting both of our backs before leaving.
"Race ya?" He whispered. We both looked at each other before running out of the room.
"That's the spirit." Mom cheered. Reaching for the box, I began to get a strange feeling of being watched. Looking around, I couldn't find anyone looking.
"Can't do anything while looking around." Dad's voice teased behind me. Turning around, I sent a smile before walking back inside with the box.
"So since my room is being painted over this weekend where do I put my stuff?" I asked as Dad disappeared behind me.
"Well you can stay in the other bedroom until it's finished." Mom said. Nodding, I passed her things out of the boxes as we made small talk.
"Are you ready to start school again?" She said.
