I often pull lines for songs and poems out of thin air. Most of the time, they're not even fully complete, perhaps just a stanza, a chorus, or a verse. Lots of times, I make up tunes for them, and sing them as I'm doing chores or walking about. I thought I'd share one with you.
I call this one "Constellation".
I'd rather be a constellation Than a shooting star At night I can make people smile No matter where they are Comets last a single instant Though they may go far I'd rather be a constellation Than a shooting star
This one just came to me out of the blue. It was inspired by the different ways people see the stars in the night sky. Many people love to view different constellations each year, and make a hobby of stargazing. I always enjoy looking for Orion, the Big Dipper (Ursa Major)**, and the Little Dipper (Ursa Minor)**. Admittedly, I'm not the best at spotting star patterns, so those three are the only ones I've found. I'd like to see more in the future--maybe Pegasus, Cygnus, the Southern Cross, or Sirius.
On the other hand, when people see a shooting star, they clamor to make a wish or tell others about it in the brief instant before it disappears. Many people miss the chance to see it, since they rush by so quickly. Then, they might be disappointed.
Unlike comets, constellations don't go away in an instant. You can see them year after year as the seasons change. It's always a tranquil experience to look at the distant stars from the Earth's familiar, solid ground.
I quite like these lyrics. I'm proud of them. Perhaps it will grow into an entire song one day. In the meantime, I'd love to know your thoughts!
