It's at exactly midnight when Castiel finally tweets what he's been waiting for. It took him about half an hour to come up with the perfect tweet for the announcement, because it's a big deal. He knows it's going to be absolutely everywhere — Twitter, Instagram, tumblr, Facebook — do people even use Facebook anymore? — and just about every pop news source out there, so he wanted it to be perfectly put together.

It's simple, a slight mysterious hint to something he knows everyone will understand. Well, he hopes, at least. His fans are bright, but they're a bit too bright. They might think of some crazy conspiracy theories.

"22 marks a new era. Don't miss it."

Instantly, the replies blow up, and he scrolls through his Twitter feed as he waits for the mindless ones to be filtered out. After about two minutes, he switches back to read the replies.

The first one is the one that explains it all. "He's turning 22 on Sunday. He must be dropping a new song!"

"NEW SONG! IT'S FINALLY TIME FOR A NEW SONG!"

"GOD DAMMIT CASTIEL STOP TEASING US!"

"Album drop? Please be an album drop!"

"Okay but like WHAT TIME, DAMMIT?"

"What if it's not a new song on Sunday and he's just sitting there laughing at us?"

The first reply to that tweet is, "I bet Lucifer's gonna tell us in a minute anyway." Knowing his track record of immediately responding to Castiel's posts on everything, it definitely seems likely.

The next tweet is some verified account he's never heard of. Judging by the bio — yes, he actually checked the account to see if it was someone cool — it's some no name YouTuber, who just said, "I smell a new @BartBaker parody coming!"

Castiel groans. Not that guy. His first parody of one of Castiel's songs was at least decently somewhat in a way kind of funny, but he literally parodies every single song Castiel releases a music video for now, and they are all absolute garbage. He's watched a few other parodies of his, too, just to see if that was the type of video people actually enjoy, and yes, people actually find that guy funny, God knows why.

Maybe it's just because it's about Castiel that he can't see the humor in them, but he genuinely cannot find anything entertaining in them. It's just not funny. It's way too forced, and the whole "stereotypical gay man" theme he has going on has gotten real old, real fast. It would be one thing if he did it well, because even if it was mean, it would at least he entertaining, but he doesn't even do that.

"*writes five paragraph essay about every possible meaning this could have*"

Castiel can't help but chuckle at that. He types out a quick reply, reading, "MLA format or it doesn't count ;)" because no one writes five paragraph essays unless they're for school, and they always have to be in MLA format, and judging by the profile picture, she's in high school or college, so she would understand it.

"I'm so glad everyone seems to agree it's a new single or I would be freaking out right now." The first reply to that tweet is the same person saying, "Who am I kidding? I'm still freaking out right now."

"New era? Why new era? What's happening? Is he changing? Is he going country cuz I'd be down for that."

Castiel chuckles. They're probably thinking of his country cover on Lucifer channel, which people seemed to adore. He can't imagine what the reaction to him transitioning to country music would be, but it would probably be a hilariously chaotic few weeks.

"READY THE WIGS!"

Castiel bursts out laughing at that. Wig snatching may have stopped being cool by 2018, but it's still one of his favorite trends ever.

"Whatcha laughing at?" Dean asks from behind him.

"'Ready the wigs!'" Castiel laughs, not looking back. "Oh my god, I love these dorks."

"Instagram?" Dean guesses.

"Twitter."

"Figures," he replies. "Your fans are weird."

"Which is why I love them," Castiel adds. He really does, especially since getting Instagram and seeing more than 140 characters from them at a time.

It just now occurs to the author that sometime soon, the 280 characters will probably become a reality and in 2023, they will probably be using 280 characters, but the author has no desire to change this until it becomes more than a trial in real time.

"Is there a backstory for 'ready the wigs'?" He says the quote in an exaggeratedly dramatic way.

"Not really." He probably doesn't know 2017 fangirl slang, and it's no use explaining it.

"Okay?" Dean says uncertainly. "Then I'm just gonna go? And you can keep getting your wigs together, I guess?" Castiel glances behind himself just in time to see Dean quickly back away, earning a laugh.

Castiel turns back to Twitter, pleasantly surprised to see how positive the reaction is so far. It probably won't stay like this for long, but that's okay. He'll take what he can get.
