Heya, I'm probably gonna make a very similar, possibly just lengthened, word for word chapter about this on Quotev, so yeah. Laziness at its finest, enjoy though!Every OC must have some form of family or an acquaintance, and lots of creators move over to:
canon relationships.
Yes, the dreaded words, are you guilty of it? Most likely, I am too, but now you should learn how to deal with avoiding it. I personally don't mind a select handful of canon relationships and interactions, but unless you pull it together really well, it shouldn't really be a thing, and the Creepypasta fandom is a fandom that you should avoid them in. At least in my opinion, that's just my opinion y'all. How to create a character without canon interactions
1. Use substitutes
Your character being in any kind of relationship with any canon character is considered Mary Sue, especially in Creepypasta. Connect them with other OCs of your own or your friend's, rather than canon characters. How about their family members? Do they still talk to them, and if so how do they interact? What about friends? Same question, specify how they interact without the help of canon characters.2. Be reasonable
Honestly, consider your character's personality and lifestyle. Who would they really want to be friends with? Plus, in the case of a Creepypasta OC, they wouldn't honestly want any relationships. Any. Look at Jeff, BEN, LJ, they're iconic and they have no relation or interactions to and with each other. Cut the canon relationships out of your CP OC, just be honest with yourself.3. Brush it away subtly
When roleplaying, you probably will be encountered with canon characters in any fandom. Don't use your OC to fangirl/fanboy, just simply treat them like a random person (which they really should be to your OC) and connect with your character, do what they'd honestly do. Brush away mentions of canon characters like your OC would (considering they don't know them). How to create a character with canon interactions
1. Be cautious, respectful and honest
Again, don't use your OC to get close with canon characters. Don't take your OC or any canon character OOC (out of character) especially when roleplaying. When interacting with a canon character, stay in character and respect that, it's annoying when you make a Quotev quiz and give canon characters (that in are harsh or cold) cute little nicknames, and make them OK with it! That's not how it works, be respectful of both your character and the main character's, don't plague it with your "obsession".2. Don't literally relate to them
Just...don't make your OC related to them?
Seriously though it's really annoying to see this, and what's with long lost twins? If you had a twin you'd know, let alone a sibling or relative, and why what logical reason could possibly explain why they're not be around?
"But Araaaah, Killua's twin is being specially trained and is more powerful than him. He doesn't know about her and shouldn't."
Don't taint the best fricking character in Hunter X Hunter. He's not that stupid, and why wouldn't they be allowed to know about each other???
"Oh Arah, (insert OC name that defies the Zoldyck naming, age, and appearance rules) knows about him but he doesn't know about her."
Why tho?
"But according to Silvia it's a special case-"
I'll stop you right there. These dumb canon-breaking sibling cliches are getting out of hand. Of all things, why siblings? Not once have I seen a fanfiction that had the creator's OC as a cousin, aunt/uncle, or family friend. Please stop with the twins, it's super annoying in any fandom.
Personally, I'm OK with reading about most canon relationships but if it's crappily put together, makes no sense, or breaks too much canon, then I'm hella not. If you want my direct opinion on specifically an OC with a canon relation, then 9/10 times I won't be OK with it. I will tolerate reading about it, and in some cases I love reading that stuff, but it honestly makes for a bad character (at least most of the time). It's unoriginal and just kinda lazy, even if you try to make a good OC. The characters and development they go through is my favourite part about any story, and I stress it a lot. Go ahead and make your OC related to a canon character, but it doesn't make for a very good character, at least in my opinion. That's all I can manage today, hope you liked it. Thanks for reading!
