This isn't particularly a common fact in the process of how to make a good OC, but it is crucial to learn from others and realize that your OC isn't going to be perfect. Taking critiques and constructive criticism is a good idea, hence why I'm making this book, and has an impact on how your OC turns out. I respect those who prefer to self-edit and stay away from going to others, but here's a few things about criticism and tips.Questions to ask when self-editing
1. Is my OC realistic?
2. Would I be scared or shocked if I was confronted by my OC, not knowing anything about them? If so, why and how would I be scared? If not, why?
3. Do cliches tie into my character or backstory? If so, what overused concepts are used, and how are they used?
4. How might others see and view my character?
5. Do I honestly think this is a good character?
Ways to Handle Criticism
Asking for advice is scary, I'll admit it. Handing over your hard work and basically asking someone to search for its flaws is nerve racking to even think about, and getting the feedback also is! I've asked for reviews on nearly all my characters, and sometimes I don't agree with critiques. I have a fantasy character named Yasmin, and they have a generic last name. Someone reviewed it and said it wasn't a believable name. I was kind of mad, as I thought that personally, it was a good name and fit them very well. Many other reasons made me agitated but that is because simply not everyone agrees with you. Several fellow writers, readers, roleplayers, and others have different views and beliefs, so you might disagree with feedback. If this ever happens when I review a character, go ahead and message me! I'll explain the reasons for my feedback, and if you aren't satisfied then maybe we disagree. Nevertheless, even if that happens, disagreeing can happen and remember that many others have different views. Simple disagreement may happen sometimes. Though I'm not saying that if someone says your OC named Eyeless Princess Raven Galaxy Bloodbath the Killer has a bad name then you can say, "I think it's fine!". Be reasonable and honest with yourself. Don't abuse the fact.
When finally getting awaited critiques, remember that it is for the sake of improving your character, and you will receive lots from it. It isn't to be harsh, just to point out the rough edges and help you smooth them down. I know, it's scary to think about, but it is for the better of helping develop your character. To me, it can feel incredibly embarrassing and disheartening when someone says that you could've fixed or improved a lot on a character you thought was amazing. A lot goes into the process of making an OC or character and remember, tips given to you should be seen as positive tools to help you fix the rough edges on a character, ultimately helping you make them better. Go into seeing feedback with a positive mindset.I'm doing reviews so send OCs in whenever, preferably through PM but you can also comment them on the chapter titled, "FORM". Thanks for reading!
