Arthur knocked on Gaius' Chamber door, "Gaius? Merlin?" He called.

Hmm...They must be collecting herbs again. I suppose I'll just wait in Merlin's chambers, Arthur thought. Of course they weren't home, when were they when he needed them? He rolled his eyes.

He sat on Merlin's bed, debating on waiting or going off to find them but jumped up, feeling something under the covers. A book, he realized, after pulling the sheets off. It was a small but thick leather book with a golden spine and a few gemstones on it. Arthur, being both nosey and curious, opened the book, flipping to a random page.

Dear, Journal.

I met my father a few days ago and...you know what? He was killed.

And of course, Arthur being the oblivious prat he is, told me 'No man is worth your tears.' What a load of horse crap.

I mean, don't get me wrong. It wasn't his fault, I know that. But sometimes I just wish he knew.

Well, anyway...I sent Kilgharah away instead of my father because he passed his dragonlord gift to me.

Goodbye.
-Merlin.

Suddenly the book was snatched out of his hands, "What do you think you're doing?" Merlin asked with anger-filled eyes. But Arthur saw fear behind them as well. He must have imagined it though because as quickly as it came - it was gone.

"Merlin I-" but he was cut off by Merlin's furiously calm tone.

"Get. Out. Now." He demanded through gritted teeth. Even though Arthur was the king, he didn't object and silently exited from the room. Half of him was burning from the way Merlin dared speak to him, but the other half (his concience), felt incrediably guilty for reading something so private.

Merlin fell onto his bed, hugging his journal tightly to his chest. He couldn't believe Arthur would do something so invasive. No, actually, he could. This event had his name written all over it! Did he even care? Did he even consider how private this book was to him? No. Probably not.

A sudden fear washed over him...what did he read...?

"Sire?" Gaius asked the king. "If i may ask, what were you doing in Merlin's chambers?" He wondered, looking in the direction of Merlin's chambers. He'd heard his ward's anger through the door.

Panic etched onto the blond king's face. "I, uh, well...icameheretolookforMerlinbuthewasn'thereandyouweren'teithersoiwaitedinhisroomandfoundhisjournalandreadsomeofitandhecaughtmereadingitandgotreallymad!" Arthur gushed out.

Gaius gave him a weird look. But soon understood, after hearing the words, "journal", "read some" and "really mad". The man frowned at him, "And why in Albion would you read someone's journal?" Gaius was mad as well but he was also terrified for the boy. He knew Arthur had a good heart, but his mind was still ruled and greatly influenced by his father's hatred.

"I don't know! Just-just tell him I'm sorry and that....that he has the day off." Arthur said, before rushing to leave, completely embarassed for being reprimanded by Gaius.

Once he sat in his own chambers, he sighed. Anger washed over him immediately after he relaxed, why should he be sorry? He wasn't acting kingly at all! His father would be turning in his grave. But then again, if Arthur kept a journal and Merlin read it...he would be furious. He now remembered what he had read in that old, leather book.

Merlin's father was Balinor.

He sent that old dragon away.

And he wished Arthur knew about...something.

That just gave Arthur a head ache. There were so many questions! And he was lucky if Merlin ever talked to him again after this......not that he really had a choice, being his manservant and all. But sometimes, when he was angry with Arthur, he'd act like a proper servent. Arthur shivered at the thought. The brass jokes were awful.

And Merlin's father was the last dragonlord...second last, Arthur corrected himself. Wait. Merlin is a dragonlord. Merlin sent away that dragon! Arthur didn't kill it...he lied!! Merlin lied to him!

Of course he did, you idiot. A voice in his head replied snarkly. If he told you, you'd have him killed.

"Why?" Arthur asked. But soon realized.

Dragonlords have magic.

Merlin is a dragonlord.

He has magic.
