Merlin started a warming fire for the camp. Arthur took him and the knights hunting again.
After awhile they started to talk about magic and the laws of Camelot. Out of nowhere Arthur turned the chat towards Merlin and asked, "Merlin, you've been traveling a lot before. Near Ealdor and such, have you ever met the druids?"
Merlin nodded, "A lot of times. When I was little anyway. The first time I met one of them was when I was eight and went exploring into the woods. This girl was singing. So I followed her because I'd never seen her in Ealdor before...She led me to her druid camp and they were all singing the same song. It was kind of like a disturbing Lullaby."
Merlin cringed at the thought. He remembered the song off by heart... "I still remember it. It's hard to forget." He added.
"Can you sing it to us?" Gwaine asked eagerly, everyone else nodded too.
"Ah, Well it's not really the most joyful song..." Merlin scratched the back of his head nervously.
"Oh, come on Merlin, sing it to us!" Elyon said.
"Fine." He grumbled. "Quick child, the magic killers are coming
Turnyour head child, don't watch our kin as they're running
The blood caped men are slaying
Soon, the ground is where we will be laying
Better run, better hide, better get far, far away
The blood caped men are slaying
Quick child, the magic killers are coming
Turn your head child, don't watch our kin as they're running
The children cry, the people scream
But to them it's all a dream, a belief
The tents pulled down, the people fled
But don't look back, or see them dead
As the Dragon men, hold their heads
Quick child, the magic killers are coming
Turn your head child, don't watch our kin as they're running
As they get closer, we fear for our lives
Mother, father, husband and wife
Yet we use no magic
We only plead
"Don't harm the child in front of me"
Quick child, the magic killers are coming
Turn your head child, don't watch our kin as they're running
They feel no love, they do not listen to your fears
Down comes the blade as my eyes glisten with your tears
Too late child, the magic killers have killed
Your blood on their cape
Child, much too late..."
The knights and king stared in shock. Arthur felt guilty too. "That's what they sung to their kids...?" Arthur asked.
Merlin nodded, "Yeah. When the Camelot knights would attack them they taught their kids to not be scared. They tried to teach them to be ready for death. I guess it worked." Merlin choked on the last sentence.
"What? What do you mean 'it worked?" Leon asked.
"The girl, the druid I met in the woods. We became friends. Her name was freya. Then we met again when she came to Camelot. Well, we're in love, planned on running away together. And when she died...in my arms...She wasn't afraid and just like she thought, she was killed by a knight of Camelot." Merlin was in tears now but trying not let it show.
"What? Who killed her?" Gwaine asked, not caring that it was a sensitive topic.
Then Merlin said the one-worded that left everyone shocked. Oh, the irony. His best friend is the one to kill his love...
"A-Arthur."
