24 | Rewrite the stars

Bold is Arthur.
Italics is Merlin.
Both is both.

Merlin put his mask on and got ready for the annual yearly festival of love.

Usually he would ask Arthur what mask he was wearing but he was feeling risky tonight. Unbeknownst to Arthur, Merlin had a crush on him. And he always looked forward to dancing with the person because he never knew who he was. Arthur thought the masked person was a girl at first but not tonight.

Tonight Arthur put on his red mask and suit as he stared fondly at the green-masked stranger before him. Someone announced that the music had been cancelled due to the singers being sick and Arthur frowned, hoping the night wasn't ruined.

Merlin looked around, nervously. Maybe this was a bad idea. He was just a lowly servant anyways, Arthur would never love him back. He went to walk away but Arthur grabbed his hand and started singing.

"You know I want you," his voice was soft and Merlin's breath hitched in nervousness. "It's not a secret I try to hide."

Arthur pulled him towards him and they started dancing slowly, never breaking eye contact. Merlin shook his head and whispered, "You won't like whats under my mask."

Arthur gave him a determined look and sang, "I know you want me, so don't keep saying our hands our tied." He spun Merlin around and smiled, "You claim it's not in the cards, that fate is pulling you miles away, out of reach from me."

Merlin didn't know what to say, Did Arthur like him back? It was confirmed when he sung the next bit to him as they danced. "But your here in my heart, so who can stop me if I decide that you're my destiny?" He dragged out the last note and Merlin nearly cried happy tears if it weren't for the doubts swirling around his mind.

Merlin whispered something along the lines of, "It's forbidden." And walked away from the king. But Arthur wasn't about to give up anytime soon so he chased after Merlin and pulled him into a tight grasp.

Looking into his eyes he pleaded as he sung, "So, what if we rewrite the stars, say you were made to be mine? Nothing could keep us apart...you'd be the one I was meant to find." Two sides of the same coin. Killgarah's words whispered in his ears, what if it had a different meaning other then what he thought?

Arthur held Merlin's hand in front of him, still unaware of his true identity. "It's up to you and it's up to me...no one can say what we get to be! So why don't we rewrite the stars? Maybe the world could be ours...tonight."

Merlin decided, 'to hell with it'. If Arthur was so insistent, then why not just show him who he was singing to? Merlin walked away from him just to turn around and sing, "You think it's easy?" Arthur looked taken aback by the masked person.

Merlin took off his mask and kept singing, looking at Arthur in a way that said, do you see why we can't be together now? "You think I don't want to run to you? But there are mountains...and there are doors that we can't walk through."

Merlin gave Arthur a sad smile as he took off his mask, he already knew it was him. "I know your wondering why, because we're able to be just you and me while we're in these walls...but when we go outside you're gonna wake up and see that it was hopeless after all..." Tears pooled both their eyes as he sang. "No one can rewrite the stars!"

Merlin stepped closer to Arthur, "How can you say you'll be mine? Everything keeps us apart...and I'm not the one you were meant to find!" Tears fell freely from Merlin's eyes but Arthur held his back tightly. "It's not up to you it's not up to me when everyone tells us what we can be. How can we rewrite the stars? Say that the world can be ours tonight."

Merlin bit his lip to stop further tears as Arthur started singing, stepping closer to him. They sung together in perfect harmony, "All I want is to fly with you! All I want is to fall with you! So just give me all of you..."

Merlin felt like screaming, "It feels impossible!"

Arthur closed his eyes and sung, "It's not impossible!"

"Is it impossible?" Merlin let out the note and dragged it.

They sung together, "Say that it's possible!" Running towards each other as Arthur Lifted Merlin into the air, holding him up with two hands. "How do we rewrite the stars? Say you were made to be mine! Nothing can keep us apart! 'Cause you are the one i was meant to find... It's up to you and it's up to me, no one can say what we get to be!"

He spun Merlin around before dropping him down and dancing with him, "Why don't we rewrite stars? Say that the world will be ours..."

Merlin held Arthur close and whisper-sung, "You know I want you, it's not a secret I try to hide." Tears pooled his eyes once again, doubt and fact still in his mind. "But I can't have you...bound to break, my hands are tied."

Merlin looked at Arthur and said, "I'm sorry, but this would never work out." He ran off, past the crowd and into the castle no where to be seen.

This time Arthur cried.
