Kia groaned, burying her face in her hands. "I'm so glad Terris is gone. She's even worse than Poppy and Cecil combined!" I laughed loudly, the sound echoing in the quiet corridor. "Poppy keeps on telling me to wear nice dresses and then giggling and never telling me why I should, and Cecil keeps wiggling his eyebrows at me!"
Smirking, I casually looped an arm around Kia's shoulders, pulling her closer. She stiffened. "Well let them talk. After all, they need to get a life. Especially Cece." She exhaled softly, a small chuckle escaping her lips.
Suddenly, she sagged against me, closing her eyes. "Speak of the devil." The apparent 'devil' was walking towards us with a knowing smile on his face, eyes gleaming with mischief.
"So, what's this I've heard about you two making out?" Cecil grinned devilishly, ginger hair wildly askew.
"Who told you we were making out?" I asked him curiously. "Not that we were." I tacked on the last bit after Kia shot me a horrified glare. Cecil wiggled his eyebrows at me and I shrugged helplessly. In all honesty, I wouldn't actually mind kissing her. I just hoped she wouldn't know.
"Terris." Of course. Terris just loved mocking us. Cecil winked at us. "Oh, and Alistair, your father wants to talk to you." He grabbed me by the shoulders. I straightened up immediately. "He says the orb and the sceptre don't work. Tell him you don't know anything about it." He shot Kia a panicked look, and Kia shook her head nervously.
"Why?" I asked.
"Just do it." For the first time in forever, Cecil wore a serious expression. "Just tell him you don't know."
I barely managed a small nod. Whatever could make Cecil scared couldn't possibly be good. I turned to Kia, who looked nervous. "Can you stay outside?" I mumbled in a small voice. "I don't want to be alone." One of the things I feared the most ever since I was a child was facing my father's wrath alone.
Kia cracked a wry smile. "Of course. If you need somebody to bust you out, I'm your girl."
"Thanks." I mumbled, pulling her into a hug. She froze for a second, but she tentatively wrapped her arms around my torso. n turn I wrapped mine around her shoulders, propping my chin on the top of her head. According to our massive difference in height, it should've felt awkward, but instead it felt just right. My hands began moving of their own accord, one sliding downwards to the small of her back and pressing her closer to me.
I heard her inhale sharply as the fingers of my other hand brushed against the nape of her neck. "What are you doing?" She asked softly, her voice muffled by my shirt. I held her close, trying to imprint the scent of her lavender shampoo on my mind, just in case anything happened.
My heart thumped wildly in my chest, heat flooding to my cheeks as Cecil made an inappropriate gesture. "Nothing." I mumbled. I didn't want to let her go.
"Your Highness? Your father is waiting for you." Reluctantly, I pulled away, making a face. It was Torship. "He's in the study, your Highness." Torship stammered, covering his eyes with a hand. Kia let out a small laugh, a soft smile on her face. He thinks what we're doing is highly inappropriate. And yeah, I read his mind.
"I'll be up in Dragon Tower." Cecil sent a pointed look in my direction then headed towards the stairs.
I took a deep breath. "Okay, let's go." It was just a meeting with my father, so why did it feel like I was walking towards my impending doom? I threaded my fingers through Kia's, squeezing gently. She squeezed right back, comforting me slightly. Warmth blossomed through my body, giving me the confidence I needed so desperately.
