The ground rumbled as it opened up, revealing an army of Terra dragons, Liam, Zola and another woman at their head. I nodded at them politely. "I assume you were successful?"
"Yes, we were." The new woman said. "I am Amina Mbandi, general of the Terrandese army. Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Teresa Hunter."
Dante shuddered next to me. "She's a real terrifying lady. Try not to cross her."
I laughed. "I'd be more worried about you."
I heard a loud yawn. "Are you done? I'd like to get this whole thing over and done with already, if you don't mind." A voice said. It came from a man behind Liam. If I thought Liam was tall, he was completely dwarfed by the man-mountain behind him.
"Be patient, Firhun." Zola chided. "You will get your chance to fight when the time comes. But for now, we will listen to Solomon's daughter."
Firhun, or whatever his name was, looked surprised. "She's Solomon's daughter? I didn't even know he had one. But again, there's a lot I don't know about him."
Adara huffed, a plume of smoke drifting out of her nostrils. You gotta chase the soldiers out of the castle before I can do my job. I agree with Firhun, hurry up. She clicked, annoyed.
I waved a hand, glancing at Dante, Liam and Zola. "Let's do this." Amina barked a command to the terra dragons, and they dispersed in a circle around the castle, like they were going to link hands and sing Kumbaya. I knew better.
Dante tapped my shoulder. "Liam and I will head into the tunnels now."
I frowned. "Didn't I say we were going to go in together?"
Dante shook his head. "Nah, they need you out here. You're our prime strategist, remember?"
I nodded. That made sense, but I didn't really want him to go alone. He'll manage, said a voice in my head. "Stay safe."
The boy with the midnight-black hair saluted me. "You can count on me, Teresa."
He and Liam disappeared into the depths of the tunnels, and now all we had left to do was wait. While we did that, I chatted to Zola and Amina, our conversation ranging from politics to everyday life. Zola grew exceedingly worried about Liam, wondering whether we should check on the boys. Amina shook her head, saying they'd be fine.
There was a loud rumbling, and Dante and Liam promptly burst out of the tunnels, running like they were on fire. "Get the soldiers out of here!" Liam bellowed. "We should not fight them unless absolutely necessary!"
True to their word, a horde of soldiers ran after them, spilling out of the crumbling tunnels. "Leave now!" I screamed at them. "Leave if you want to live!"
Most of them scuttled away, through a gap in the wall of solid rock. A few of them, however, chose to stay. "We will not leave." One said, gripping a sword in his hand, shield in another. He was probably a high-ranker. "We are loyal to our king, unlike those traitors."
Amina narrowed her eyes. "So be it."
The war begun.
Both sides charged- dragons swooping down from the skies, mortals retaliating. I could see Kia, Gavin and a tiny Alistair on the roof, Alistair furiously waving his sword around, Gavin probably getting into peoples' heads, and Kia simply glowing with power. I outstretched my hand, mouth forming spells before I even thought of them in my mind. A protective shield sheltered Celeste just as she shoved her diamond heels at a soldier who came too close, injuring him while blinding his companion. Both looked uncertain as to whether to harm her- she was the daughter of Lukar's duchess, after all. One of the soldiers swung his blade at her, but Celeste somehow managed to block it with her shoe. Ciana appeared in a burst of light, spooking the two men and sending them running.
