Chapter 12: My confused heart and I

"Good morning everyone and welcome to this year's Bridgeville Olympics!"

Applause erupts through the crowd of students clumped around the bleachers.

"Today we will be watching and participating in the first three events of the competition."

Another round of applause.

"Now, you all know that we have kept the type of events and when they will be held a secret from you so far. However, I will now be announcing the first three events and their order."

Anxiety spikes through my every nerve. Hunter looks over at me in reassurance. I smile back, my attempt at putting on a happy face proving to be quite pathetic.

"Chill out, Violet" Logan whispers in my ear, before wrapping his arm around my shoulder.

I lean into his shoulder, finding comfort in its warmth. He chuckles softly but let's me lean into him, obviously sensing how nervous I am. However, what I don't notice is how Hunter's gaze lingers just a second too long on Logan's arm as it rests on my shoulder.

"So, for the first activity, we will be having an extreme obstacle course. Whoever you choose to be your teams competitor must be fast, and more importantly, flexible."

The guys and I immediately spin to face Heather.

"All right, I get it" she says, cockily, "I'll be our first competitor."

We all grin at her before turning back to the teacher out front.

"Now can all of the competitors please come forward and we'll explain the course."

Heather and 11 other boys/girls approach the front of the room. Among them I spot a few dancers, lean athletes and even a few nerds. You can tell by surveying the other groups that all of the athletic and non athletic people have grouped together. Except for me. I was stupid enough to go into a group that is way out of my league sporting wise.

"Now," the teacher says, turning to face the course, "every round will normally have two eliminations. However, this first course will have only one, being whoever places last."

From there she explains each aspect of the course.

"All competitors at the starting line!" She shouts.

I watch from a distance as Heather swiftly puts her hair up into a pony tail and cracks her neck from side to side. She looks like she is getting ready for battle. Yet, based on the monstrous roars and cheers thundering through the crowd, this very well may be war.

"On your marks" the teacher briefs, "get set. GO!"

Each competitor starts with a bang, sprinting to the first obstacle, which is a hoop dangling over a pit of foam cubes. Heather is the first one through, leaping through the hoop and gracefully falling into the other side of the foam pit in a flip.

Majority of the audience stands in awe of what she just did, me included. Yet, though she may have made it look easy, only a small portion of the others made it through. The ones that didn't were immediately drawn back in timing, whilst struggling to swim through the entire foam pit.

Heather swiftly pulls herself out of the pit and continues through the obstacle course with a smirk. The rest of the obstacles are easy for her, meaning that she had left the rest of her competitors to eat her dust within mere seconds. You could tell by about halfway through it that she was going to win, but seeing her run through the red ribbon at the end still brought a joyful smile to my face.
