Chapter 38: Raw emotion

The cool night air sends shivers down my spine, it's freezing kiss a reminder that it is the peak of Winter. However, my attention is currently preoccupied staring up at the stars above us.

Hunter lays down on the blanket beside me his jacket brushing mine. I turn my head to see him looking up in complete bliss. A smile makes its way into my lips as he turns to look back at me.

"Whatcha looking at?" He asks with a smirk.

"You" is all I say.

"Like what you see?"

"Nope," lies, lies, lies.

"Yeah right" he snorts, his smirk widening.

"Just shut up and come here" I tell him, grinning ever so slightly.

I reach my arms towards him. He pauses to look between me and my arms cautiously before scooting closer. We both shuffle toward each other until I can wrap my arms around his torso, absorbing his warmth. He leans in closer so that my head is sitting in the crook of his elbow as his fingers caress my hair.

He wraps his other arm around my waist, pulling me against him so that my bent legs are lying on top of his extended ones. Everything fits together perfectly. We fit together perfectly.

"This is really nice" I murmur, trying not to disturb the peace and quiet around us as I snuggle closer into his chest.

"I'm glad you like it" he replied deeply, leaning down to kiss the crown of my head.

I'm suddenly very, very glad that he can't see my face as it is currently burning a bright red.

"But you know what's even better?" He continues after a few minutes.

"What?" I ask, leaning back to look at him.

"How much I can feel you blushing right now."

I immediately shoot up from the ground, shoving him in the shoulder.

"I was not blushing" I respond rigidly.

"Then how come I felt you smile and your cheeks get warmer?" He taunts me.

"Whatever. Don't get full of yourself" I grumble, searching through the picnic basket, "hey I thought there was one more cupcake!"

My dismay brings a smirk to his lips.

"You mean this one," he saying, pulling it out from behind his back.

"You son of a beach" I say in an accent.

He chuckles at my acting, leaning back on his other arm without a care in the world as he carefully eyes my prize. Then as he looks at me one last time before leaning in to take a bite I let out a squeal and jump into action.

Jumping on top of him I snatch the cupcake out of his hand with a victorious grin.

"You good there?" He asks with a mysterious grin.

"Yep!" I smile through the cupcake.

"Happy?", nod.

"Warm?", another nod.

"Comfortable?", this time I have to pause my eating to understand what he means.

Only then do I realise that in leaping on top of him for the cupcake I had landing straddling him. A savage crimson floods my cheeks, as I stumble trying to get off of him too quickly.

"Cocky bastard" I mumble, whilst sitting back down at least a metre away from him.

"Come on, you know you love it" he smirks, biting his lip.
