Chapter 15: Detained

Everything is a fuzzy blur of colour and the lack of it. My head is spinning so fast and intensely that I can't tell what's real anymore. All I know is that someone knocked me out after the fire alarm went off. Now normally I would have immediately started questioning who could have attached me, but as my vision begins to clear, a blurry figure solves the mystery for me.

"I warned him you know" Bella's hissing voice slips into my ears.

She slinks towards me like a snake, each step making me press myself further into the wall I'm leaning against.

"I-Is that what you put in the letter? A t-threat?" Realisation finally begins sink in as to why Hunter had been keeping secrets.

She smirks at me, as though what I had just discovered is only a half truth, and that she seems to be taunting me with the other half of it dangling from her perfectly manicured fingers.

"You don't get it do you?" She teases.

"Care to enlighten me then since Hunter was more inclined to poke himself in the eye with a fork than tell me the truth?"

She smiles, as though the thought of such a thing occurring is soothing for the mind, then continues forward. She stops right in front of me and crouches down in her three inch heels, looking me deep in the eye. I can't yet tell whether what I'm seeing on her face is a look of hatred or envy.

"The threat I sent to Hunter wasn't about his own safety, it was about yours" she hisses, like the truthful words are acid on her tongue.

Suddenly everything falls into place, like a switch has been flicked in my mind and all of the mysteries I had experienced in the past week now make perfect, ridiculous sense. That's is why Hunter had told me that his secrets were for my safety. This is why he has been so possessive of me lately.

"Wait, why would you threaten me?" I ask, my mind still reeling from the sudden revelation.

She shakes her head at me in the same way Heather had earlier today. With a look making me feel innocent, unaware, but most importantly, vulnerable.

"This tournament is more than just a game bitch, it reflects back on each of the four heirs, though you obviously don't care much about your position."

"I'm sorry what?"

Great, just when I thought that I was finally being given the truth, she goes and complicates everything. What the hell does she mean by 'heirs' and what is my 'position'. She seems to read the question in my eyes since her brows crinkle even more in confusion.

"Oh my effing God, you don't even know what is going on in this town do you?"

The question catches me by surprise. I had thought that Bridgeville was just the same as all of the other small, innocent towns but Bella's making everything sound like a conspiracy.

"You wanna tell me about that part of what's going on as well?!" I ask, my annoyance clearly written on my face.

She simply smirks, delighting at my exclusion from the bigger picture.

"Nope. I'll let Hunter fill you in on that one,"she says gleefully, "that is, if you ever make it out of here."

Having said the last word, she quickly removes herself from the foreign room and locks the door behind her. I know that I should be running after her and banging on the door, begging for her to let me go, but somehow I just can't find the strength to do it. Hunter hasn't just been lying to me about the threats Bella sent. He's been lying about something far greater than that and thankfully now I know it. So as Bella said, 'if I ever get out of here' you can be sure as hell that that boy is going to pay.
