Chapter 19: The truth sucks

The drive to Hunter's house seems like the longest car ride of my life.

With no one having the guts to risk saying anything, the silence is palpable. Plus, with the number of sharp turns we are hitting, I have to turn myself into a brick in order to keep from touching any of them. With Hunter driving I am stuck in between Logan and Ethan - who seem more than uncomfortable from the several dirty looks I have been shooting them.

Oh and to make matters worse, turns out Heather had been waiting in the car. Now we're all stuck in a hexagon of awkwardness.

"So" Heather says quietly, "how was your weekend Violet?"

Everyone in the car - including Hunter even though he is driving - spins around to look at her in the backseat.

"Really?" Logan asks in disbelief, though our looks tell it all.

"What? I'm just trying to make conversation! At least I didn't attack her in a dark alley!" She defends.

"We didn't attack her!" Logan scoffs.

"Yes you did!" I agree with Heather, though I'm still on the outs with her.

"She did spray perfume in Ethan's eye" Brendan points out.

"Oh shut up lover boy, you're just agreeing with Heather cause you're crushing on her!" Logan shouts.

Brendan's eyes immediately widen in shock and embarrassment.

"N-No I'm not" he claims, though his stuttering voice tells it all.

"Just mind your own business, Logan!" Heather hisses, her surprised expression contrasting her aggressiveness.

"Why? Are you actually surprised?" He asks, making it very clear that the dramatic situation is affecting everyone, "you guys are almost as obvious as Vinter over here!"

The smirk drops from my face like a brick hitting the ground. Hunter simultaneously slams his foot down on the break making the car come an abrupt halt. Everyone is thrown to the left, slamming into the closest person - who in my case is Ethan.

He looks at me wide eyed as I instinctively place my hands on his chest to stop myself from slipping. But unfortunately Logan catches onto the tension and opens his mouth to say something.

"Well well, maybe I was wrong. Is there some Vethan in the near future?"

This time Hunter spins around entirely. Yet, his eyes aren't on me, they're on Ethan. I actually have no idea what happens in the few seconds they are staring at each other. It looks like a contest of pure masculinity and I am in no way able to decipher to silent conversation held behind it.

"Just stop acting like a god damn match maker Logan" Brendan huffs, "or I'm more than happy to smash your head in."

"Get in line" Hunter growls.

"Ok that's it I'm done!" I shout, reaching for the door handle.

But before I can yank it open and storm out, Ethan reaches over and pulls my hand back with his own.

"Well if it's gonna be that uncomfortable to take a single bloody drive then I guess we'll just have to tell you here."

I've never seen Ethan so forward and confident. If anything he's always been the quieter one of the four and I thought that that was what I liked him for. But after seeing what this Ethan is like... it makes me like him even more.
