The Crystal Gems let us ride Lapis's bike, but they made sure to surround us so we wouldn't try to escape or anything. The ride to their HQ was peaceful as I rested my head on the bluenette's warm back. I wonder what it'll be like living with our former enemies, I thought, keeping my grip around Lapis's waist tight. Lapis definitely didn't sound too thrilled.
We soon arrived at the beach house that Lapis and I once stopped by to drop Steven off. "Welcome to our house!!!" Steven shouted with arms spread wide, displaying the house. Lapis put on a fake smile for Steven, and I just played along with it. As we walked in, I looked at Lapis's face in concern - she looked uneasy. "Hey, at least you get to live with your brother again, am I right?" I mentioned, putting a hand on her shoulder.
"Yeah...it'll be nice not having to hide from him anymore..." she muttered, half-smiling. We walked in through the front door and I looked around the living room. "Nice place..." I muttered, taking off my leather jacket and tying it around my waist. "It might be a little crowded, but i-it's okay. You guys can share a room with one of us!" Steven said, scratching the back of his neck.
"Let's share a room with you, Steven." I suggested. "Oh! O-okay..." the boy replied enthusiastically. We then stepped into Steven's room, quickly regretting my decision. Toys, clothes, and other junk were cluttered everywhere - on the floors, the bed, the desks, everywhere.
I cringed, and I heard a small grunt from under Lapis's breath. I scanned the room some more, and was thinking of where the hell we were gonna sleep. "Um, Steven...I don't think there's any more room..." Lapis muttered.
Steven's joyful expression fell, and he gave us puppy dog eyes afterward. Lapis stared at him for a good 2 minutes with a blank expression, until she finally broke. "Ugh, is there any other rooms in the house? Like maybe guest rooms?" she asked, clearly bugged.
"N-no, there's no guest rooms, but you guys could share a room with Amethyst, Garnet, or Pearl..." Steven suggested. I looked over at Pearl standing in the doorway, and I could've sworn she hissed at me. "Uh, Pearl needs her space..." I muttered nervously, watching as the thin woman slowly stepped out of the room, eyeing me down.
"Well what about Amethyst?" Steven asked. "We could try that..." Lapis mumbled, and we walked out of Steven's room. He led us to Amethyst's room, and I almost yelped in surprise - her room was worse than Steven's! There was literally no walkway whatsoever, and it smelled like something died and was stuffed with a sack of old cigarettes.
"Whaddup, guys! Ya need somethin'?" the short girl greeted, strutting toward us. "Well, Peridot and Lori-" "Lapis" "...Lapis need a place to sleep, and we were wondering if they could crash with you?" Steven asked, twiddling his fingers. "Sure. If you could find a place in here..." Amethyst said, walking off into some area.
"I'll leave you two to decide..." Steven said, smiling, and walking out of the room. Lapis and I both looked at each other with puzzled expressions, and we began looking around. "Let's split up. I look over here, you look over there..." I suggested, and we headed our separate ways.
I was walking around, then I all of a sudden heard growling. I looked in a dark corner and noticed two eyes staring back at me. I yelped in terror, and backed away slowly. The thing then barked, and ran out of the corner - OH MY GOD IT WAS A DOBERMAN. It was snarling and barking and it charged at me full speed, and I made a run for it. "WAAAAUUUGGHHHH!!!!" I hollered, looking for Lapis. "What's wrong?!" Lapis asked worriedly as I ran toward her. "RUN!!!" I screeched, running past her. "Wha-" "BARK BARK BARK!" "AHHHHH!!!!!!"
....
"Any luck?" Steven asked us as we sat on the living room couch, shaken. "N-no..." I replied, grabbing Lapis's hand. "Aw, what happened?" Steven asked, concern in his face. "A-Amethyst's damned psychopathic dog chased after us trying to rip our asses off." Lapis deadpanned. "Hm. That's weird. Amethyst doesn't even own a dog..." the boy mentioned, and Lapis and I both shuddered.
"Well, the only place you guys have left to stay is Garnet's room, so you could try that..." Steven suggested, putting a finger on his chin. "Steven, I don't think staying here is a very good idea for us..." Lapis told the boy. "Aw, I'm sorry guys...I can't think of anywhere else..." Steven said, a hurt expression on his face. We sat there in silence for a moment, until Garnet broke the silence. "There's rough land with an abandoned barn a few blocks down - they can stay there." she suggested, crossing her arms.
"GASP! That's a great idea, Garnet! What do you think, guys?" Steven asked excitedly. "We literally have no where else to go..." Lapis said once again, shoving her hands in her pockets. "Okay, let's go there!" I said enthusiastically. We then drove down a few blocks to an old abandoned barn that looked like it hadn't housed anything in over a decade.
"Old...isolated...quiet..." Lapis muttered, looking at the dull scene. Steven then scratched the back of his neck, and looked at the ground. "It was uncle Andy's barn. It-it's not much but--" "It's perfect." Lapis stated, smiling slightly. I then smiled at her, intertwining my fingers with her.
"Great! You guys are gonna love being Crystal Gems! I just know you will!" Steven exclaimed, jumping up and down. Lapis and I giggled, and we looked at the barn one more time in deep thought. "Lapis...we're gonna live a great life here...you...me...and our new friends..." I said, looking her in the eyes. Lapis smiled back nervously, and looked back at the barn for one more moment. She then looked out in the direction of where our gang building used to be - which was now half-destroyed. She looked back at me with glossy eyes, and tears began filling my eyes as well. All of the memories of us playing together as kids, and my mom and I having what I thought was a great relationship, and how far we've come.
Lapis then kissed me on the lips, and gave me the biggest smile I've ever gotten from her. "I know we will..." Lapis said.
