I unlocked the door and stepped inside. Something felt different, something was off. I looked around, but hadn't noticed anything. The farther I walked in the more I discovered. Y/N's shoes weren't by the door like they usually were, her jackets were missing from the coat rack, her bags absent from the bench by the door. At first I thought maybe she had just cleaned, but the farther I walked in the more things I noticed were missing.
"Y/N?" I couldn't hear her walking around or singing along with a song like she normally did when she cleaned. I walked into the kitchen and noticed some stuff on the bar. Tears glazed over my eyes when I saw what it was. I sat down at the bar stool and picked up the piece of paper. My eyes scanned over her words, my heart breaking more and more. I didn't know I hurt her that much. I didn't know I had been making her feel so neglected for months, but the only one to blame was me. Y/N was gone and I pushed her out the door.
I grabbed the necklace, the picture, and the note, folding them and putting them in my pocket. I called Y/N as I headed out the door. It automatically went to voice mail, but my phone buzzed with a text.
Hey, thanks for the call/text. I'm driving right now, but I'll get back to you when I can.
It was her automatic driving text. I had no clue where she was going, but I knew it wasn't somewhere in Columbus. It was Christmas break and she didn't have any classes. The only place I could think she would go was home.
The elevator ride to lobby couldn't go quick enough. I tapped my foot impatiently, withholding a groan when the doors opened to let some people on. The elevator quickly filled up as it stopped on two more floors. I didn't even wait for everyone to clear out before I pushed my through and headed towards the front desk. "How may I help you, sir?"
"Have you seen my girlfriend come through?" I asked, gripping the marble countertop.
"Yes, actually. I helped her pack boxes into her car. She said she was going home." The older man told me.
"Do you know when she left?" If she was on the road for more than an hour there was no way I'd catch up to her before she made it home.
"Maybe a half hour ago."
"Thanks!" I called as I headed out to my car. I could still catch up to her. I had to catch up to her. I tried calling her again, but this time it went through. "Hello?"
"Y/N, baby, where are you?" I asked frantically, climbing in my car.
"Why do you care, Zach? You didn't give a shit about me three hours ago."
"Don't say that, you know it's not true."
"Sure didn't seem like it." Her voice had never sounded so dejected and sad and it ripped into chest, causing an ache in my heart.
"Baby, please, come home. Tell me where you are. Let's talk about this." I pleaded.
"Talk? I tried to talk to you for months, Zach. You never wanted to listen, you never wanted to do anything that had anything to do with me. Do you know how it felt to go to bed alone every night, how it felt to wonder if you never came home because you didn't want to see me?" I could hear the strain of her voice the more she spoke. She was trying to hold back tears, and so was I.
"I know and I'm sorry. I abandoned you and shut you out, and I have never regretted anything more in my life. I know it's not an excuse excuse, but things weren't going my way on the ice and I took it out on you. I just- I'm so sorry, Y/N, for everything." There was a long pause before I heard her let out a heavy sigh.
"I'll be there in twenty minutes, leave the door unlocked."
