Riley

Surprisingly, Liam and I worked well together. Whenever he needed help with organising a business meeting or just needing a coffee I would do it for him and in return he helped me when I was stuck on something. I could tell that he was good at his job.

Thankfully so far I hadn’t had to pick up Jack early for nursery, he hadn’t been ill or naughty. I hated the idea of bringing Jack into work because I knew I would get distracted by him and not be able to perform my job properly.

But as I thought that I got a phone call, “Hello, this is Riley speaking.”

“Hello Riley, its Mary from the nursery. I just want to inform you that Jack has been sick, it would be best if you could come and get him so he can rest.”

“Sure, sure, I’ll be there in the next fifteen minutes.” I was panicking for my little boy at this moment in time. I quickly got from my seat, fortunately I saw Mr. Linley as I was leaving.

“Mr. Linley,” I called over to him. “I’ve got to fetch my son he has come down with something, I’ll be back shortly.”

“That’s okay Riley. I hope he is okay, I’ll get someone to take your calls when you’re out.”

“Thank you Mr. Linley.”

“No problem sweetheart. I’ll see you shortly.”

I rushed out of the building to see my son as quickly as possible. As soon as I got to the nursery, there sat in the waiting room was the girl Lucy with my son in her lap. “Hey,” she smiled when she saw me. “I think he’s feeling better now.”

“Nice to see you again Lucy.”

“You too Riley. I really like your little man, he’s so much like my brother.”

“You said that before,” I said to her.

“I know, they’ve got the same eyes. Anyway I’d better give him to you.”

“Yeah maybe,” I laughed. “So when are you due?”

“Next month, I can’t wait you know?”

“I know, I couldn’t wait for him to come, even though I didn’t know his father or that my life was rocky at that point. I already loved him.”

“I can see that,” she hands Jack to me, placing a kiss on his forehead. “Maybe when I have my little one we could meet up at some point and get to know each other properly.”

“I would love that, I’d like to have a girlfriend here, it gets a bit lonely living with just boys.”

“I know, I live with my husband, I have my brother, my dad, my uncle, my little cousin; there are too many boys in my family. I’m just lucky to have an aunt and a mum, who I adore.”

“Yeah you are lucky, I have no one like that.”

“Not even your mum?”

“No not even her, she kicked me out because of this little guy.”

“I’m so sorry Riley. If you ever need someone, I’m always around,” she said leaning in to hug me. Once she pulled back, she gives me her phone number which I could call at any time if I needed her. I then bid goodbye as I needed to get back to work.

Once back at work I sat Jack on the chair beside my desk with some colouring books and pens. As he scribbled I check my emails and made phone calls to those who had asked me to call.

I shocked though when I saw Liam walk out in front of me. He stopped directly in front of me and smiled. “Hey Riley.”

“Hi Liam,” I answered back.
