Riley

A week later it was time for my first ultrasound, I was so excited for it. I couldn’t wait to see my baby for the first time.

I had dropped off Jack with Liam’s parents because they said that they would like to look after him for the day while Liam and I went to the ultrasound. I was very grateful for them because I didn’t want to drag Jack to the clinic. It was a special time for Liam and me.

We sat next to each other in the waiting room of the clinic. The walls were covered in posters showing casing, safe birthing methods, safe sex and multiple classes for pregnant women. It wasn’t the first time I had seen these.

Suddenly a voice broke me from the posters. “Liam what are you doing here with Riley?”

I looked up and saw Lucy standing in front of us, her large belly looked like it was going to burst. “Oh you two know each other,” I smiled.

“Yeah we do Riley, we know each other very well,” she smiled.

I’m shocked for a moment, “You didn’t get her pregnant did you Liam?”

“Ew no, Riley, Lucy is my sister.”

“Oh,” I sighed embarrassed.

“Anyway Lucy, I’m here with Riley because we’re having a baby.”

“Really?”

“Yep really, it’s our first ultrasound today.”

“Congratulations,” she smiled hugging us both. “I guess we’re family now.”

“I guess,” I smiled back. “What are you doing here?”

“I just had my last ultrasound. I was leaving when I saw you.” I laughed. “I’d better be going.”

“Okay. I’ll see you soon.”

“Yeah, I’ll see you,” she replied walking out of the clinic.

After ten more minutes of waiting we were finally called into the surgery room. Everything was ready for me when we entered. The doctor asked me to climb onto the bed, Liam took a seat beside me. “So this is your first ultrasound, having you had one before?” she asked.

“Yes, a few years back when I was having my son.”

“Did you have any complications?”

“No, none at all.”

“Good,” she smiled. “Now lift up your top so we can have a look at this little munchkin.” As she set up she asked, “How far along are you?”

“About six weeks.”

“Okay.” She placed the cool gel on my stomach and gently rubbed it in. she moved the wand over my belly and a grey picture showed on the monitor. “There’s your baby,” she pointed to the dark blob in the middle of the screen.

I felt Liam grab my hand. “She’s beautiful baby,” he kissed my forehead. “Thank you.”

“We won’t know the gender until much later but you can have fun guessing,” she doctor smiled. She printed off multiple pictures of our baby and wiped the gel off my stomach.

“Thank you,” I said as we left the room.

We left the clinic hand in hand. We drove back to his house hand in hand. When we arrived his parents weren’t in so we headed to the living room. We sat on the sofa hand in hand looking over the photos. I was so happy.

I felt my eyes get heavy and slowly close.

When I woke up, I had an arm tightly wrapped around me with a hand placed on my belly. A warm breath heated the back of my neck, it felt cosy. I knew that Liam was curled behind me on the sofa. I heard a sudden clatter from the kitchen. I wriggled out of Liam’s hold and headed towards the noise.
