Shawn's POV

August 10, 2017

"Today's my birthday," I open the door to a high spirited April with some birthday balloons in her hands and a tray of muffins in the other. Her hair was in that messy but cute braid she always ties it in, with a band tee, those same ripped jean shorts and black vans.

"I'm 2 days older than you?" Is all I could say, she looked beautiful; she always looks so flawless and I just feel awful I'm not going to be around her until the end of the year, we might even forget each other this time.

I don't want that to happen. She still hasn't let me in fully. But, the rest of the tour is going to be amazing. I'll be in New York in a week and I can't wait to continue on this journey.

She'll still be in this shit town with her asshole brother and my best friend who's such a dick. I don't know why but I began to develop sort of a protection over her despite what everyone says and thinks of her.

Everyone says I'm the beauty, but she's the beast.

They're wrong. She's gentle, she's humble and really funny. I can see through that smile, I feel her pain and wish she'd let me underneath; I could potentially be what she needs.

Or she could be what I need.

But I can't put her through this, this story can't end because of my tour. I'll lose her forever.

I'm snapped out of my thoughts when I see April set her balloons next to mine from my party and then walk into the kitchen to wash her hands. I just stood there, silent, just waiting for her.

She sometimes is so mysterious and I just want to follow wherever she goes. "The drive here is ridiculous around this time of day." She says walking back over to me, revealing her dimples as she smiles up at me.

"How'd you know I was going to be here?" I smirk, crossing my arms and look down at my jeans and then up into her eyes. "Brian," she simply says and I raise an eyebrow.

"He kinda came over to wish me a happy birthday and all, brought me flowers actually and told me you weren't coming to the dinner tonight. Maybe you'll come now because you now know it's my birthday!"

I was confused, Brian's not being a dick to April like he usually is... I wonder what's been going on with them two.

"You know, it's funny how your name is April and you're born in August." I speak finally, changing the subject as I don't take my eyes off of her. She grins and then bites her lip, "you still haven't wished me a happy birthday yet." Is all she says licking her stained lips, trying to catch me off guard.

"I didn't know you wore makeup."

"Occasionally," she smirks, her voice was low and putting me under her spell.

To tell you the truth, I didn't know why my heart was beating so fucking fast. I mean, this is a normal feeling every year for everybody. That feeling you get when you are counting down the seconds to the new year with your buddies, shouting and glancing at everyone's expressions as the clock is seconds away from hitting 12, forgetting and letting go of all your worries as all those weights of the world lift off your shoulders.

For just one second.

"Happy New Year," they say and in one second a year ends and a new one starts. You ask yourself: "What should I do?" As you stare at the girl you've been wanting to kiss for a while now; she's looking up at you like you put the stars in the sky, "just kiss her already!" You think and hear everyone shouting and laughing.

"Five,"

Do I do it?

"Four,"

I turn her way and smile down at her.

"Three,"

She's the only thing I see, the only girl I need.

"Two,"

I grab her and pull her by the waist.

"One." They all shout as I bring her body closer, shutting my eyes and softly pressing my lips to hers.

"Happy New Year," she whispers, opening her eyes. Her eyes were the glimmering color of emerald, sparkling in the light.

When she turned her head, this way and then that way, looking at everyone jump and hug and kiss and celebrate the birth of a new year, her eyes caught the light and played tricks with anything and everything that screamed 'spring'.

But this was winter, and my heart is empty and stone cold without her soft, pink lips pressed gracefully against mine. So I grabbed her arm once again, turning her to face me and I take a gander into that green color she posses that brings hope and life no matter what has happened. And looking into those eyes, I could see it. And she knew that I could.

I didn't care about anything else in the world right now. I kept my focus on her as she's drowning in my chocolate pools and I'm lifting her chin, and we're both actually diving right in.
