THE START OF A NEW YEAR ON EARTH

[AT FIRST I WAS GOING TO DO A HAPPY NEW YEAR CHAPTER FEATURING THE PALADINS, BUT THEN I REALIZED HOW HIGHLY IMPROBABLE IT WOULD BE FOR THEM TO KNOW/EVEN REALIZE THAT IT WAS THE BEGINNING OF A NEW YEAR? PLUS, THEY'RE YEARS AHEAD OF US, SO FROM THAT GREW THIS IDEA.]

[THIS IS GOING TO BE A DIFFERENT STYLE OF WRITING THAN WHAT I USUALLY DO. MOSTLY BECAUSE IT DOESN'T SEEM RIGHT FOR THIS.]

[ANYWHO, LET'S GO.]

On Earth, it was the last day of a long, eventful year. Houses were alight with Christmas decorations that haven't yet been taken down, and both families and friends spent the time with each other, awake and excited. There was very little time, maybe ten minutes, until the next year would start.

Somewhere on the planet, roamed a middle-aged man with brown hair, stubble, and a small scar across his forehead. He looked up and his bright brown eyes searched the ever-darkening sky for the stars to guide him on his way. When he did, he couldn't help but wonder if, however ridiculous the thought might seem, he were ever to see his son ever again.

Are you also looking up at this same sky?

However, he had no way of knowing that his son had mysteriously disappeared off the face of the Earth, alongside three other children and a young man.

There were nearly eight minutes left as a small Samoan woman went to retrieve a glass of water from the kitchen, giving herself a few moments away from the mass of people crowded together in her living room. As she filled her glass, her eyes couldn't help but wander until they reached a small picture magnetically stuck onto the fridge.

The image was of two people, the woman and a younger, taller boy with the same brown hair and eyes. Both dressed in yellow, the two were smiling brightly as, together, they clutched a small cake with a big frosted heart crudely drawn onto it. That was the day she and her son had first entered the magical world of making food, when they had baked their first cake together. Tears began to well up in her eyes, but as she stared at the picture, she had forgotten all about what she was doing in the kitchen. Her glass had already became full and the water continued to pour onto the floor until she quickly yanked her cup away and set it onto a counter. She then began to clean up the spill, but she couldn't help herself as her eyes kept darting back to the picture.

Are you out there, somewhere?

With around four minutes left, a large family sat together, yelling as they got into position in order to take a family photo as they waited for the clock to strike 12 o'clock. As they did, some of them couldn't stop themselves from staring at the picture from the previous year. This year, one member of their family would be missing.

One of them, a child clad in blue, raced up to the picture and took in the familiar mischievous blue eyes of the absentee.

"Put the picture back and come here!" One of his relatives exclaimed, a sad smile on his face as he gestured for the boy to join the others. The child placed the photo back and, with one last look, ran towards them.

When will you come back?

There was only a single minute left now. Alone in her house, sat a sad woman and her equally sad dog. Both quietly looked ahead at the television screen at the old film of her husband and children. It had been a year since her daughter had disappeared without a trace, and nearly two years since the father and eldest son had gone missing on a mission to the distant moon Kerberos. What little hope the woman had left of their return dwindled inside her and one day it would probably go out. Today was not that day.

Come back to me.

And as the beautiful fireworks exploded in the air in all kinds of colors and designs, the four of them continued to yearn for the return of their children.

[WELL, THAT WAS MEH.]

[A/N: ANYWAYS, HAPPY NEW YEAR, FELLOWS. HOPEFULLY, THIS YEAR WILL BE A GREAT ONE FOR EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU. STAY STRONG!]
