CHAPTER 4
The sound of tinkling laughter, the buzz of talk and the untimely banging of trays on tables coming from the other side of the double doors made me forget momentarily my current predicament and occupy my mind instead with the thought of the social scene I was walking into.
You know the feeling you get before you step into something you know you won’t like. Well that same feeling was coursing through my body right now as I halted in front of the open cafeteria doors. I hadn’t really given much thought to this particular aspect of high school life since this morning, but now that I was finally living it I felt none the better.
It wasn’t long before Victor had pushed open the doors and strode in like he had not a single care in the world when I came out of my stupor and quickly scurried after him, anxious not to draw any attention to myself.
Once in the lunch line he glanced down at me with a smile as if to make sure I hadn’t run away yet. I may be a coward on the inside but I wouldn’t let others see it.
“Don’t worry. They usually lose interest after a few days. It’s very easy for a new distraction to come along in this high school”
He was trying to put me at ease with my surroundings and I smiled in gratitude, noticing however the darkening of his eyes as he said the last part.
“It’s the least I can hope for” I sighed and quickly grabbed the last chicken sandwich left and a can of coke.
Having chosen my lunch and paid for it I could suddenly feel the dreads start to creep up on me as I surveyed my options. This had been a scene I had dreaded experiencing when I first paused before the doors of the cafeteria and now it was hitting me in full force.
Where was I to sit?
It had been very different in England. In our small town everyone basically knew everyone else as the population was little more than 5000. So it wasn’t very easy for students to become bullies unless they wanted the whole town to find out. But here, I wasn’t too sure what to expect. One thing was certain; I did not know the least thing about anyone here.
Just as I was heading over to a single seat at an empty table in the far corner, I happened to look up and find myself the prime object of interest of no other than Mr Green eyes himself.
He was sat a few tables away from where I stood frozen, with a group of guys who seemed to be his friends. I wanted to make a face at him as he continued to unashamedly stare at me but wasn’t given the chance to do so when his attention was suddenly occupied by the same brunette who had tried to trip me up in chemistry.
I felt a scowl stretch across my face as I saw her smash her lip gloss smeared lips onto his cheek, leaving a big lipstick smear where her kiss had been. I felt as if she had laid her claim on Mr Green eyes. Quickly looking away, before I could see any more of their public display of affection, I made my way slowly towards the empty table in the corner, all hopes of making friends and trying to have a normal life disappearing with each step I took.
Somehow as strange as it seemed I felt a piercing sadness within me because it wasn’t I who was next to him cuddling into his chest. However before I could contemplate this sudden change in direction that my thoughts had taken I was promptly interrupted by Victor who came up beside me and gave me quite the scare that I almost dropped my food on the floor.
“Do you want to sit with me today? I don’t have a big group of friends unlike Mr pretty boy Drew over there” He nodded towards Mr Green eyes “but I do have an adequate number of acquaintances who shall be most delighted to welcome you into our little coven”
The last part he said in a very poor attempt at my accent and I smacked him on the arm, all the while laughing like a little child.
“I am glad I amuse you” he began to manoeuvre me towards his table and as I approached I found myself the prime interest of three friendly faces who were all looking at me with varied levels of curiosity.
There was a boy and two girls. The boy seemed to be a year older than me, probably in his senior year. He was average looking and seemed to be out of place in his coven as Victor called it. At least I wasn’t the only one I sighed a sigh of relief.
Beside him sat a breathtakingly beautiful girl with blonde hair and piercing blue eyes that seemed to sparkle in the glare of the fluorescent lighting. She seemed to be appraising me, seeing if I had any faults. Finally, my eyes travelled to the last member of Victor’s coven and I found myself greeted by a fairy like girl with shoulder length light brown hair and big hazel eyes.
“Hello” She said with a smile to me, patting on the seat beside her, indicating for me to join them.
“This is Berry Abbencroft and she is the new student from England!” Victor began to introduce me to everyone sat at the table.
“And these are my friends Andy, Louise and Lucy” He said pointing to each of them.
“So you are the new student from England. It must be very different here” Andy said trying to be friendly.
“Yes it is. Especially since this is my first high school experience in America” I replied
“Your accent is lovely. I lived in England for a time when I was eight and I know how big a change it is. But you will like it here”
Louise the blonde beauty said with a hesitant smile and I instantly returned it with one of my own. We began to talk of things in general when Lucy suddenly burst forth with a comment on my hair.
“Your hair is soo long! Do you wear extensions?”
It was a common question that people often asked me for my hair was extremely long and a wild mess of curls. My mother always used to say that I had got it from my father.
“No I don't wear extensions” I answered and suddenly Lucy’s eyes lit up.
“Wouldn’t I do anything to have your hair” She sighed as she twirled a strand of her own hair between her thumb and index finger.
“I am left with this boring shade of brown that barely grows an inch a year. It truly is annoying that I should have brown hair when my brother here is a blonde”
For a second surprise hit me and then once I glanced between her and Victor, I fully understood what she had meant.
Victor and Lucy were siblings. Before I could say or do anything Lucy interrupted my thoughts with another question.
“Why don’t you let your hair down? I am sure it would look amazing if you let it down”
“Its too curly to be tamed. But hey I think your hair is amazing. People often assume that long hair is wonderful but its not. I can never let it down like you can” I said wistfully and she smiled in return.
“Can we go of the topic of hair please?” Victor whined and soon we were talking of something else and surprisingly I found myself getting along with everyone perfectly fine even Louise who I had had doubts of when I had first seen her.
All was going perfectly fine when suddenly a loud bang echoed around the big spacious room and we turned to the source of the noise.
A scene of horror met our eyes.
