CHAPTER 10

It was 8.30pm and Louise, Lucy and I were all ready to go to the party. I was starting to feel extremely nervous as I tugged a hand through my hair which I had allowed Lucy to convince me to let down. It was already starting to frizz up a bit and I hoped I didn’t look like I had just arrived from monster’s university.

I had been forced into a dark magenta dress with full sleeves and a V-neck. It was simple and the flared skirt ended just above my knees. I had never really exposed so much skin as the back was bare and I had borrowed one of Louise’s black tights which made me feel more comfortable in my attire. Lucy had been keen to make the whole look quite gothic as she had persuaded me to wear magenta lipstick and some eyeliner on my top lashes. The look was finished with a pair of black combat boots – much to Lucy’s chagrin.

She had a more feminine approach to her outfit, choosing to wear a vintage floral dress and coral coloured high heels. Louise had gone for a perrywinkle skater dress that brought out her deep blue eyes. All in all we had transformed into our alter egos: the goth, the girly girl and the ice queen.

Andy pulled up in his Chevy truck to pick up Louise and Lucy and I decided to opt for her yellow bug instead. I laughed when I realised the headlights had lashes painted around them. It seemed like a typical Lucy thing to do.

“Are you excited?” She asked as she bounced up and down in her seat.

“I am, but it’s my first high school party so I am kind of nervous”

“Oh, don’t worry. I am not exactly an expert either. My brothers are extremely overprotective and the only reason they let me go this once is because JayJay has been my best friend since we were little”

“But aren't you only sixteen?”

“Mmhmm. JayJay found the other boys and girls his own age really intimidating when he was five years old and so he chose to befriend four year old me – not that I am complaining”

I smiled at her obvious crush on Jayden and hoped that one day I would find someone like that. A best friend who always had my back no matter what.

The party seemed to be in full swing by the time we arrived at Jayden Price’s house – which happened to be a massive three story building. I could see the driveway crowded with numerous flashy cars and dressed up teenagers. It was a scary sight and I suddenly wanted to flee the scene.

Lucy brought the car to a stop a few yards down the street and we got out. As we walked over to the brightly light up party house a sudden thought struck me.

“Oh no Lucy, I haven’t bought Jayden a present!”

“You seriously don’t have to Berry, I mean you only met today and we’re already here so there’s not much you can do – wait, can I call you Bear? That sounds so cool! You can be my teddy bear”
