CHAPTER 16
My mind was dwelling on the tense encounter that had just passed between Drew and Estelle instead of the biology notes that I was aimlessly scribbling into my notebook. It wasn’t natural, the way they had attacked each other. I shivered at the way Drew had looked and the words Estelle had spoken before she left. Why would I go to her? Somehow in the back of my mind, I knew the answer but was too frightened to accept it.
After Estelle had left, I had made my way directly to Biology. Drew didn’t try to stop me and I was thankful for once. I had to be away from his presence when my mind was clear and I could contemplate Estelle’s words. I was just noting down a function of the mitochondria when the fire alarm went off. Mrs Jennings shot out of her chair and in her high pitched voice told us to leave our stuff behind and get out the door quietly. I stuffed my phone into my pocket and made my way out the door that was quite near to my desk, and into the throng of students milling into the hallway. I was so preoccupied with getting through the crowd and to the front doors that when someone grabbed my wrist and yanked me into a classroom to my right I screamed.
“Shut up!” A female voice hissed and I found myself alone with no other than Estelle herself.
Even though this would have terrified me the week before I knew that now she was no threat. At least I thought she wasn’t.
“What do you want?” I asked recovering from my shock.
“To talk about Drew and for you to listen to everything I have to say carefully, because trust me Amberia, you’ll be thankful after you’ve listened”
“Oh is this more about Drew being a werewolf? Please, just leave me alone Estelle. How can you expect me to believe this fairy-tale you live in” I rolled my eyes at her perseverance.
Come on! She must be tired of the joke by now too. Why wasn’t she caving in?
“You think this is a fairy-tale? That b****** and his family killed my parents!” She yelled.
I froze at her words. She was turning pink with rage and her eyes were flashing.
“Are you saying…”
“YES, I am saying they are all murderers. Not just any murderers, but beasts. They aren’t human Amberia and you are their next victim”
…
One Hour Later.
We were driving down the motorway and listening to the Arctic Monkeys. Estelle was tapping on the steering wheel of her black battered Honda civic and driving at speeds that were authorised by the devil himself.
A few minutes later we took an exit and drove into what looked like a quiet dry Texas town. Cacti littered the scenery and reminded of the old western movies that sometimes played on TV which I had never really watched. Haunted store fronts and derelict buildings greeted my eyes as I watched them flash by outside the window. My brain conjured images of corpses and ghosts. This town was starting to send shivers down my spine. Estelle hadn’t made any move to stop as we cruised down the road at the same speed and I was thankful. I had no intention to stop here.
However, suprising me, she hit the brakes and the car skid to a stop in front of a building that sported a large sign spelling out the word Salon in block capitals. The sign was aligned above a set of double doors and even before I had overcome the shock of Estelle’s rash driving and opened the door of the car and stepped out I could hear voices and music and the clinking of glasses. When I stepped out of the car my companion came around to my side. I tried to ignore the bitter scent of alcohol and cigarette smoke whilst thinking up something to say to Estelle.
