CHAPTER 17

 “Is she alright?”

“No. She fainted when I…”

“How could you?”

“Oh dear, I hope she doesn’t take this too badly”

“Shh! Leave us alone”

Blinking into consciousness I found myself staring up at a picture. It was badly drawn – messy, childish. It was a sun – bright yellow and with a smiley face – and it was surrounded by rainbows and hearts. Warmth pooled through me. It was a pleasant sight.

The next thing I noticed was where I lay. It was strangely snuggly, much more so than my own rickety bed. The thought sent a jolt through me but being far too tired I ignored it. There was a smell – what was it? Earthy, woodsy, almost like the smell of the first rainfall after a long dry summer with an added sweetness to it. I let a smile drift onto my face as I shut my eyes taking another large gulp of air. Gosh, the scent was so addictive. Before I could inhale more of that heavenly fragrance I heard a voice.

My eyes blinked open and I looked around for the voice, spotting the owner immediately. He was sat beside me and he was saying something.

“…so scared” He finished what he had just been saying.

Scrunching up my face I frowned at him. He looked familiar. Something about those eyes.

“Amberia?” My name rolled off his tongue and I smiled like a little puppy.

The way it sounded when he said it made me feel good. The feeling was nice, reminiscent of the feeling of giggling.

He said my name again and I drifted out of my reverie to focus back on him and what he was saying.

I found it hard to concentrate, instead choosing to touch his arm which was resting on the bed. There was a sketch on his white shirt. I focused on it and slowly the lines formed together and I saw what it was.

A black wolf. I gasped as it all came back to me.

Shooting out of the bed I stumbled onto the other side – the bed between us. He made a move to come around when I shut my eyes and shrieked.

Arms wound around me and I thrashed against them, struggling out of his grasp. We tumbled to the cold floor and I crawled away from him until my back was against the wall opposite the bed and he was hunched before me.

Wrapping my arms around my knees I hid my face in them, rocking silently back and forth as I tried to keep the terror in check. He’s a wolf! My brain was screaming and it was all I could do to stop another shriek from leaving my lips. He didn’t approach me, thankfully. I really didn’t want to see him or be in the same room as him. I swallowed the knot in my throat and removed my arms from around me. My eyes drifted to him and I could almost decipher the agony written all over his face. I began to move towards the door. I had just reached for the handle and was pulling it open when someone pushed it open from the other side, making me stumble backwards.

I glanced up just in time to see Victor and Louise burst through the doorway. They had looks of worry plastered over their features and the moment they saw me unharmed they let out sighs of relief.

“We thought you were getting kidnapped by the way you screamed. Are you alright?” Victor asked me softly, glaring pointedly at his brother.

Louise shuffled towards me and put her arm around me. I buried my face into her shoulder.
