CHAPTER 18
My heart tore a little at the seams but I masked it with a fake smile. He’d found his mate – why did he need me?
“That’s good then. That you’ve found your mate” I was trying to be happy for him though my voice had a tiny wobble to it.
“It’s very good, in fact I’ve never been happier to have her” He sounded like a love sick man.
Biting back any mean comments, I asked the question that was nipping at my heartstrings.
“Who is she?”
“Someone you know” He smiled.
I swore I saw a glint of mischief in his eyes as if he was playing with me.
If he wasn’t going to tell me who she was I wouldn’t ask. After all it was none of my business. I stood up and slung my bag onto my shoulder and took a few paces away from the picnic table. Confusion sprawled over his features and he frowned as he watched me go.
“Where are you going?”
“I don’t understand why you need me when you’ve found your mate? You’ve kissed me. Damn it, you kissed me yesterday!”
The calm composure I’d been trying to maintain fled the second I began to speak. I turned my back on him and began to jog away. He did not deserve my time. Not when he was a lying cheating prick as well as being a werewolf. I couldn’t believe how stupid I was being.
“Stop!” His voice demanded from behind me as he followed but I ignored him.
He tugged me to a stop and pulled me around to face him.
“Don’t touch me” I said, but he didn’t let go.
“Leave me alone!” I tried to pull away.
He shook his head.
“I won’t”
He was being stubborn and I hated him the more for it.
“I hate you so much. You have a mate! Why can’t you leave me alone and go find her?” I cried out.
“Because she is standing right before me” He whispered and I froze.
My body stilled and my mouth fell open as I gazed up at him with wide eyes.
“What did you…” I started when he cut in.
“You’re my mate Amberry”
I felt my heart speed up and my breath was coming out ragged. How could this even happen? I was a human.
“But I am a human” I hissed at him in panic and he pulled me into him.
“I know. Sometimes we are matched with humans. It’s happened before” He said, tucking a wayward lock of hair behind my ear.
I was still staring up at him in shock.
“Is that why I feel this pull towards you?” I asked softly and he nodded.
Glancing away from him I let my eyes trail of into thin air. Was this the reason? Were we really mates? I looked back at him and my eyes latched onto his lips. Was this why I wanted to kiss him so bad even though he was my worst nightmare?
He seemed to have seen the train of my thoughts for he leant forwards slightly.
“Can I kiss you?” He murmured into my ear making me shiver involuntarily.
I nodded with a sigh and his lips met mine. The kiss was sweet, tender, gentle. His hands were framing my face as he held me to his lips like I was too delicate to touch let alone kiss. I kissed him back slowly as I wound my hands into his messy hair and fell into the warmth of his chest.
