CHAPTER 7

The instance I stepped out of the BMW I felt like one of those celebrities under scrutiny. But the only difference was that those who stared at them were fans – people who admired them. The people who were looking at me now were not looking at me in awe but in surprise and some even had disgust plastered all over their faces. They looked upon me as if I was not meant to even breathe the same air as Drew let alone ride in his car. The notion chilled me to the bone.

Drew – being the flirtatious charmer that he was – had opened the door for me and I shot a small smile his way. He was being gentle with me as if I was some sort of doll that he would break if he held onto too tight.

“Thanks for the ride” I said and he grinned in return.

“You’re welcome, my lady” He said in a poorly done English accent and I couldn’t stop the laugh that left my mouth.

He froze in place as he gazed at me, his eyes turned into a deep dark green and the laughter faded away. I was left gazing back into his eyes; my heart hammering away at my chest and my breathe stopping short. Feeling nervous I bit my lip out of habit and the action seemed to draw his attention for his gaze moved down to them. The intensity of his stare sent warmth and heat shooting through me.

“I need to get to class…” The words came out all wobbly and he nodded, blinking quickly. He looked away from me but I couldn’t stop myself from drinking in his features; each crease and laugh line that adorned his face.

It was only when I heard the buzz of talking around us that I averted my eyes and focused on our surroundings. People were staring. It was obvious even though a few were trying to be sly about it. The new girl has just stepped out of the school hottie’s car. What shall we make of this? I could just imagine a news reporter saying those words on Jackson High School TV, if one as to exist.

With one fleeting glance back at Drew who was frowning at a group of girls nearby, I made my way towards the school building; with each step I took I wished I could just disappear into a hole in the ground and never show my face to anyone ever again. And be a complete coward? My mind chastised me firmly and I tried to keep my head held high until I reached the double doors. After I had actually made my way inside the building I sprinted towards my first lesson knowing full well that today would be tenfold worse than yesterday.

Oh the joys of high school!

Maths had been relatively uneventful which I was thankful for. Apparently the entire popular crowd weren’t good at maths or so it seemed for none of them – not even Victor with his nerd glasses and science magazines – was in my AP Maths class. What I was dreading however was Chemistry. It was slightly annoying that these people; especially Drew and his pixie-like blue eyed admirer would be there to ruin my favourite lesson of the day. At least Victor would be there to keep my sanity intact.

Despite the fact that I had a long way to go from maths to the science labs I took my time. I didn’t want to face them – any of them even Drew despite how kind he had been this morning. For all you know it could be a farce – I bet he gets a kick out of toying with the new girl’s feelings said the pessimist within me. I couldn’t help but disagree. The expression I had seen on his face this morning was pure, raw vulnerability. He had looked at me as if I had full control over his life – a notion that was completely ridiculous.

By the time I did get to the chemistry classroom most of the students had already arrived and I sidled to the back, eyes on the floor and ignoring the whispers. They seemed to follow me everywhere I went. I felt like an outlaw. The thought brought a smile to my face and I was so lost in thought I didn’t even realise I was at my desk until someone poked me in the arm. Glancing up I saw Victor giving me a look of confusion; his brows were furrowed and a crease separated them. I set my bag down and began to take out my notebook and pencil case.
