 CHAPTER 12

I found my mother lounging on the sofa in the living room when I entered. She glanced up from her laptop and smiled at me.

“How was the party, honey?” She asked patting the space beside her.

I jumped up next to her and leant my head against her shoulder – I could feel sleep beginning to kick in.

“It was okay” My voice sounded weary and tired.

“You arrived back quite early. Its only 10.30” She stated as she began to type away on the keyboard. The sound of the keys lulled me into a slight doze.

“Did I?”

“Yeah, I didn’t expect you back until eleven but I am glad you’re home. I was having second thoughts about having sent you to a party – a high school party at that – on your second day at school”

“Mmhmm”

“You seem to have made quick friends, haven’t you?”

“Nah – Jayden invited the whole year group”

“No I mean that girl whose house you went to – what was her name again?”
“Louise, and I suppose we are friends since she invited me to her house and let me borrow her clothes”

She patted me gently on the head.

“You seem sleepy – go take off that makeup and get to bed”

I rose slowly and she narrowed her eyes at my outfit.

“That dress looks quite short, honey”

“I wore tights!”

“Okay fine. Off to bed now. Goodnight”

“Nighty nighty”

I drifted up the stairs and into bed. I was much too worn out to do anything else.

THREE DAYS LATER

Drew hadn’t so much as said a word to me in the last two days and it was driving me nuts. He would pass by in the corridor every so often and shoot me a small smile and wave but that was as far as our interaction went. I began to question whether everything between us had been a mere figment of my imagination. The idea was completely possible as I had a silly way of making up little stories in my mind. For all I knew I had been developing a crush on that boy and my daydreaming mind had concocted a little fairy-tale for me.

But I knew our intimacy in the first two days of school hadn’t been pure imagination. It had happened. Even though it felt incredibly unbelievable, a boy had taken an interest in me. He wasn’t just any boy, but a handsome charming one; those rare types that barely existed anymore. The type that was as gentlemanly as Mr Darcy and as passionate as Heathcliff…wait what? Why was my mind comparing Drew to Mr Darcy and Heathcliff? You should lay off Pride and Prejudice and Wuthering Heights for a bit, my mind chided me.
