CHAPTER 9

He refused to look at me as he glared pointedly at a copse of pine trees beside us and I knew he didn’t want to tell me. But I had a right to know and I would find out even if it meant that I would be putting him on the spot. Who was that trio?

“They’re just normal students like you and me; only they happen to dress differently and are much more rude”

My mouth dropped open as he blatantly lied to me. There was certainly more to this what he was saying. It was obvious.

Suddenly he glanced at his watch and announced “It’s about time we went back – lessons start in a few seconds”

“What!?” I scrambled off my seat and began to pack my uneaten lunch back inside my bag. He took my hand and began to pull me along with him as we sprinted back towards the courtyard. I paused to catch my breath and he smirked down at me.

“What if we just skipped class? I could show you around the city”

I shot him an ‘are you serious’ look and shook my head.

“No way. I already missed Biology and English Lit yesterday thanks to what happened. I don’t want to miss them again today”

“You are such a good girl”

“And what are you? The big bad wolf?”

He didn’t say anything to counter my teasing and I looked up at him. He had gone a few shades paler than he normally was and his rosy lips were pressed together tightly.

“Hey, are you okay?” I reached out to touch his face and he pulled away abruptly, leaving me with my hand hanging in the air and looking like a complete moron.

“I need to go. I have economics”

With those words of parting he fled the scene, his footsteps pounding on the floor – a rhythmic mantra that had me in a trance.

When I arrived at Biology I was thankful that I wasn’t the only one who was late. The students weren’t in their seats but were huddled in a group around the teacher. Dropping my bag into an empty seat I approached the huddle and found myself face to face with a rat dissection. Great I thought as I covered my nose with my hand. It wouldn’t be too long before the whole room began to stink of decaying rat intestines.

The dissection itself wasn’t gory, for me at least. A ginger boy beside me was trying not to barf into his hand as the teacher slit open the rat’s body in the middle. Feeling sorry for him I gave him a small smile of comfort and he grimaced in return.
