CHAPTER 14

Browsing the shelves, the musky scent of old books and freshly printed paperbacks assaulting my nose; I let my fingertips trail lazily along the spines of books. I could feel Drew close by, his shadow snuggling into my feet as I walked across it.

“So, do you read much?” I asked, trying to make light conversation.

His eyes flickered onto my face as he replied,

“Yeah, I suppose. Nothing so fancy like Victor and his Dickens and Shakespeare but I do read. Have you ever read any of Stephen King’s books?”

“I did try and read The Dead Zone but I don’t think I made it to the end”

“Well you should read IT. It is very well written but it might be too daunting for you” He smirked down at me.

“I wouldn’t be so sure if I were you. I love scary stories” I replied quickly.

“Here you go – read it if you’re so sure of yourself” Drew said as he pulled out a weathered copy of the book we had been discussed and handed it over to me.

It was a thick book and heavy too.

“Thanks”

“No problem” He replied.

I caught myself looking into his eyes for a fraction too long. He did nothing to divert his own gaze either. Suddenly, the silence encompassing us felt overbearing. I tried to look away but I couldn’t.

“Amberry?” His voice was cracked, broken.

I took in a sharp breath of air at the sound of my name on his tongue. He began to close the distance between us until we were barely two inches apart. Our difference in height was noteworthy.

He angled his face to mine as if he was going to…

I shut my eyes abruptly as I felt his lips on mine. They were soft, warm, loving. A buzz seemed to ignite in my heart as he peppered my lips with kisses. I had never done this before but I let instinct guide me as I stood up on my tiptoes and kissed him back. The initial shock had worn off. I could now embrace the feelings tingling through me as we kissed. He lay a hand on my cheek and the other on my waist, setting my whole body aflame.

A few moments later – though they felt like only fleeting seconds – we broke apart. I slumped against the bookcase behind me and gasped for air as he leant forward, his chin grazing my forehead. Shivers were coursing through me like shock waves after an earthquake.

If this was what it felt like to be kissed by a boy I had been missing out on so much.
