It was valentine's day. The day for couples to show their love for their significant other, the day everyone goes out and has romantic dates or whatever. Everyone except me. The guy I want as my valentine probably doesn't know I exist. I have lived in town all my life, but I wasn't a palace guard and I certainly wasn't a captain for the guards either. I worked at a produce stand in town and lived in a small two roomed house.
I had the day off so I had taken it to buy my groceries. I had seen the couples out and about already. Couples holding hands and kissing, teenagers going out on dates and having fun. I smiled seeing everyone so happy, but my heart kind of hurt. My heart was taken by someone who had forgotten me. We were friends as children, but once he started guard training he didn't have time for friends and I haven't heard from since.
I carried my paper bag in my arms as I walked home thinking about him. I had seen him again back when the Earthlander's had been here and before Jellal was king. Somehow he didn't see me, but was I to expect? He was the captain. He had his duties to uphold.
I reached my house finally, not realizing how long I had thought about the topic. I dug the keys out of my purse and unlocked my front door. I swung the door open, walk in and kick the door shut behind me. I walk into the kitchen and set the bag on the counter. I lay my purse down on the counter as well and began putting away the groceries. As I did so I couldn't help, but to think about... him.
~Flashbacks 3rd pov~
"Hey (Y/N)?" he asked the little (H/C) haired girl. She turned to him with a smile on her face, her bright (E/C) eyes shinning with glee. They were sitting outside in the grass after playing for a while. He wore a white t-shirt and black pants while she wore a (F/C) sun dress.
"Yeah?" she asked him.
"When I start training we won't be able to play anymore. I'll be gone for a long time. I... I want you to know that..." he starts to say, but his mind wonders. A pink hue dusting his cheeks.
"What is it Hughes?" asks (Y/N) placing her hand on his shoulder with a concerned look on her face. He looks at her with a hint of sadness hidden in his eyes.
"I want you to know that I will never forget you. You will always have a place in my heart." he says. Now it was her turn to blush. She smiled again and giggled.
"You'll have a place in my heart too Hughes." she chimes and hugs him.
(Y/N) had met her Earthland counterpart and was told that she needed to help free her friends who were captured in the palace. (Y/N) had agreed to this, only for the fact that she knew King Faust had gone mad with power. Her father had been a palace guard close to the King, he had told her of his plans. So this was how she was going to help change the fate of Edolas.
(Y/N) ran down the hall of the palace looking for either her counterpart or one of the other Earthlander's. She slid to a stop when she saw Sugarboy and Hughes, beaten up as they were, walking towards her. They stopped, but didn't prepare for a fight. They knew it was no use.
"(Y/N)!" yelled Coco. She turned to see Coco running towards her. "Come on! The others are looking for you!" she yelled and grabbing (Y/N)'s arm and began dragging her arm as she ran to were the other's were.
~End of flashbacks (Your pov again)~
I sighed as I put the last of the groceries away. He probably thought I was the Earthland counterpart. Just then I heard a knock on the door.
"Who could that be?" I ask myself out loud. "No one really ever come to visit." I say walking over to the door. I open the door and gasped when I saw who it was. Hughes stood there with his arms behind his back. I wanted to cry. Was he here for me or did he have the wrong place?
"(Y/N). I'm sorry I haven't come around sooner. I'm so sorry we drifted apart." he paused for a second. "I told you when we were kids that you would always have a place in my heart. I haven't forgotten that and I certainly haven't forgotten you." he says.
"Hughes. I... I'm not mad at you. You and I both knew what would happen after you started training, but I thought you had forgotten me. It was hard because I have kept you in my heart like I said I would."
"(Y/N) I wanted to tell you something back when we were kids, but I didn't. I knew it would hurt worse if I did. Now... now I can tell you and it won't be as bad." he says then takes a deep breathe in then exhales. My heart beat faster in my chest. "(Y/N) I love you. I always have." he says looking me in the eye. Tears brimmed in my eyes making it hard for me to see.
"Oh Hughes!" I say covering my mouth with my hand.
"Everyone says you only fall in love once, but that's not true because every time when I see you, I fall in love all over again. I can't hold all of this in anymore (Y/N). Will you be my valentine's?" he asks pulling out a bouquet of (F/C) roses and holding them out to me. I take the roses as tears streamed down my face. All I could do was nod my head because I didn't trust my voice not to quiver. I wrapped my arms around his neck making him hug me back. "Will you me my girlfriend (Y/N)?"
"Yes. Of course I will Hughes." I say crying from my heart bursting from happiness and love.
