^The necklace Dan has except it has a black string, not a chain that the picture has shown. Also, his is the left one.^
Dan's POV
I walked out the school's front doors, squinting as the bright afternoon sun flooded into my vision. I heard the many voices of students who were glad they could leave this hell hole for the rest of the day. I heard the car doors, horns, and tires as parents arrived and students left, some students getting into their own vehicle as well. I heard birds chirping and wind whistling by gently. I heard my name being called.
I looked around for its source, toying and twirling with the necklace that hung around my neck. I always made sure if I twisted it three times one way, it had to go back three times the opposite way so it would be in its original spot. I hadn't carried it with me for ages, but it was still comforting to do. I had had a dream about him last night, so I decided it seemed fit to carry the necklace he had given me.
Here, Dan. I got us friendship necklaces. We're killing two birds with one stone: smashing them gender roles, and showing everyone, including you, that you are loved. The words Tyler had told me so many years before echoed in my mind.
"Hey, Danny!" I couldn't see the source of the voice. "Howell!" I continued looking... "Mind freak!" I finally saw the source of the voice: Chris and, standing behind him, his mate Alfie. Fuck off I thought, but would never dare to say.
"Funny how he doesn't manage to spot us until we mention the "mind freak" name." Alfie chucked as he said this, nudging his friend. "Eh?"
Chris just chucked in response. "Hey there, fag. Isn't it a bit warm to be wearing all black? What's that you have around your neck? Aw! Is this a necklace? And it looks like it has a pair!" Chris said, taking the necklace in his hands and standing uncomfortably close to me. I wasn't really smaller than him, but he knew I was mentally weaker. "Who has the match, Danny? Huh?"
"Another fag? Is he your boyfriend? Aw, how sweet!" Alfie chimed in with the same artificially sweet voice. "And it's a music note, how cute. Is he obsessed with music too? I mean, you've always got those headphones with you wherever you go..."
I couldn't handle Chris and Alfie talking about him like that. He didn't — doesn't — deserve that disrespect. The words mustered themselves up and came out of my mouth without me intending them to: "Don't you. fucking. dare. talk about him like that, you fucking dick head."
"What was that, Danny? You have a voice?? WOW! This is news to me! Alfie, did ya hear that? He spoke!" Chris exclaimed in his artificial voice.
"Yeah, Chris, I did. That was quite extraordinary, really, truly brilliant." They both laughed again. Then, stopping, Chris looked at Alfie as though a thought had just popped into his head.
His hand snapped upwards towards my necklace before I even had time to process what he was doing. He snatched it from my neck. Thankfully it was on a chain and didn't have a clasp and was simply on a string that tied in the back, so it didn't break.
"Hey!"
"Want it Danny?" Chris held it in his hand, waving it back and forth like a hypnotist. "Do ya? Ya want it, Danny? Well then, you'll have to come and get it!" He chuckled as he and Alfie turned and darted around in the other direction, me chasing after them. We turned right when we reached the end of the wall, continuing it by making that turn. Thankfully I had long legs and was fast, so I could keep up with them. Although, stamina was not exactly my strong suit.
They stopped after about 10 meters (30 ft) and I wasn't expecting them too, so I almost ran into them. Taking advantage of my closeness, Chris shoved me down onto the ground. I landed on my bum and my hands were behind me, I had caught myself. They felt all warm and tingly, most likely they had gotten cut up.
