I glanced behind me to see the Gate gone and no sign of the my old home. I shivered and looked at my surroundings, the others did the same or flew away into the gray sky. The ground was covered in what appeared to be a layer of ice and snow, small figures dotted a ridge in the distance a head of me, a forest to my right, an empty looking plain extended to the right. I didn't see anyone else from the village so I headed to the ridge, keeping the forest on my side.
After flying for about an hour my wings grew tired from their lack of use until now, as I drifted to the ground snow flakes began to fall, landing softly around me. I hurried into the forest as the wind began to pick up, swirling around the trees. I ran a mile into the forest before stopping beneath a massive oak tree, scaling the tree to get some shelter from the upper branches, after I settled into the space between a tree branch and the tree trunk I took off my satchel those in the village had provided me with and began to take inventory. I found three packets of jerky, two of dried fruit, flint and steel, extra warm clothes, a blanket, a sleeping bag, a compass, a lenght of paracord, and a first aid kit. I rummaged through the bags pockets on the front, locating a fire blanket, two ponchos, and a flash light.
The snow continue to fall faster, covering everything, so using a poncho and the paracord I create a small shelter in the tree.******
A long howl echoes through the forest that night, startling me awake. The forest had a soft glow from the full moon, a light flurry cascaded from the few clouds in the sky as another howl responded to the first. I glanced around nervously, the howls echoing through the trees. I started to dismantle my make-shift shelter, shaking the snow off the poncho and stuffing it back into my bag. I slung my satchel across my body and crouch on the tree, another howl cut through the cold night air.
A pair of yellow eyes flashed at me from the ground, several silhouettes emerge from the surrounding forest, the wolves teeth flashing in the moon light. I slowly stand up, spreading my wings as one reaches the base of my tree, snarling up at me, I growl right back. The wolves seem taken aback by their quarry's defiance, pausing, the one below me growled again, drilling his eyes into my own before leaping to the lowest branch. I stared in awe as he slowly got closer to my pearch before realizing my danger and backed into the tree with a small yelp. The wolf jumped another branch, now only two away from me, I frantically searched for a way to defend myself, before snapping a branch from the tree.
As I tuned to look for the wolf my stare was meet with a pair of yellow eyes, I shrieked and swung blindly, losing my balance and crashing to the forest floor. The wolf appeared to grin, leaping down, practically landing on my lap, he approached at a leisurely pace, enjoying my fear as he came closer.
"Run" a voice hissed, I looked around wildly, but couldn't find the source. I looked back at the wolf, he was practically laughing at me by now. I growled and swung at his head with my branch, not even brushing his nose.
"Feisty pup." Another voice called, I whipped my head around wildly to no avail, still unable to find the speaker.
I practically screamed as I rushed the wolf before me, swinging my stick with wild abandon.
He glared at me when I finally landed a blow to his head, he snarled savagely and launched towards me, I barley had time to raise the branch in hopes of defense before he crashed into me. I froze, I couldn't even move my wings, "Now, when I get up. Run." a voice whispered as he hung his head next to my ear. I nodded slowly, he carefully backed off me and I bolted into the trees before taking flight.*****
