I wake up as the lights begin to rise, illuminating my prison,"Hello Aven." He froze in place.
"Hello Kara." He placed a plate on the small table in the room's center.
"Is the weather nice today?" I hadn't moved from the bed.
Aven shrugged,"So so." I nod, he leaves.
"Bye." I wave to the closed door. I lay in place for a while longer before moving to the table. A stack of pancakes sits on a plate beside a massive water bottle. I scoop up the top pancake and tear a bit off of it, wandering around the room,"Hey whoever made these things did an awesome job." I figure that the room is magically monitored so I don't mind talking to them. I finish off most of the pancakes and have some water before summoning my sword. Now to find where this chain ends. I follow the chain to the corner where it is attached to the ground. I sit down on the floor and start to try and cut the chain near my wrist. I use my sword like a saw, the metal stays firm, sparks fly I continue. The sound of metal on metal fills my ears. No progress.
I saw for what must be hours, my arm tires, I keep going.
A hand on my arm,"Stop that Kara." I continue.
"I said stop."
"Why?"
Grumbling,"You could get hurt."
"You mean like this?" I tilt my arm, showing the nick from yesterday.
"Just like that. Did you do that on purpose?"
"Nope. You should know that. I mean, wouldn't an armed prisoner practicing fighting technique set off a few alarms?" This time the hand grabs my sword and my other arm, forcing the two apart. I twist to face an angry Basil.
I hold my hand out, palm up,"Give me back my sword." Basil contiplates my sword.
"This one?" Oh how it hurts to see him holding it, keeping it from me.
"Yes, now give it back!" I scream at him, launching myself forwards, swinging my fist at him. Basil stepped to the side, dodging. I turn to follow he twists away again,"Give it back!" I roar at him, trying to fly in the to small space, trying to gain the advantage. Basil simply retreats so he stands in front of the door. I struggle to reach him, to reach my sword, leaning as far as I can.
"Please." I beg, ready to break my hand if it means I can retrieve my blade.
"Stop." His commanding voice surprises me and I fall to the floor, hanging my head as unheeded shame courses through me. I let him take my sword, my defense. The only thing that has ever been really good and kind to me in this Desert, and Basil took it from me. He must die. The voice offered no question, no negotiations, no chance at redemption. I almost agreed. I glance up to see Basil contemplating my sword like he was some kind of expert.
"Give it back to me Basil." My voice was soft, danger lacing it as power laced my veins.
He offered a patronizing grin, that was the last straw. I wrapped my hand around the chain and pulled, miraculously my thumb didn't break, even more miraculously the chain broke. Basil glanced my way at the sound of the breaking chain, just in time to see me reclaim my sword with a triumphant roar. The chain lashed across his face as I shoved my way past him. Basil reacted quickly, snatching the end of the broken chain and pulling. I took off through the air, the hallway just tall and wide enough for me to fly, dragging him behind.
I clutch onto my sword like it was a life line, returning Basil's occasional attacks with ease.
"You will pay for what you did." I growl as he foolishly hangs onto the chain as I climb the last stair way, not bothering to slow down I smash through the front door.
"Hey Kara."
"Hey Death." I latch onto the chain and start to fly higher, the heavy weight on my arm confirms my suspicion that Basil still followed me. As I reach about a thousand feet I level my flight, hovering over the stone path below.
"Regret it yet Basil?" No reply. I glance down to see him clinging to the chain, his eyes closed, soft whimpers drifting from him ever so often.
I fold my wings.
We plummet, Basil screams. So do I.
I snap open my wings around two hundred feet, slowly lowering us to the ground,"Stand up." I spit at Basil. Slowly he opens his eyes, as though he had thought he had died.
He slowly stands,"Take this off please." I hold the shackle in front of me, watching him. Slowly he walks over and fakes removing the shackle, swinging at me when he thinks I wasn't paying attention. Big mistake.
I slash his upper arm, he curses, backing away. I wrap the chain around my arm so it would stay out of my way until I got it off. When I return my gaze to him he is slowly approaching, sword in hand.
I spread my wings wide, waiting. He lashes out, I raise the arm with the chain his sword jumps away with a clang. I swing my sword to be meet by his, several more such clashes occur. I finally launch myself into the air, snatching Basil's sword as I rocket skywards.
I glance down once I am far enough up to be out of Basil's reach, his stare looked shattered. He gathered himself, his broken stare turning to steel. I look at his sword, it was larger and heavier than mine. The blade was longer and slightly wider, flaring near the pommel.
I glance down to his broken stare, and drop his sword. He runs to catch it, almost impaling himself in the process. As he starts talking to himself, possibly to cast a spell on it I drop out of the sky again. I stop, blade inches from the back of his neck he stops moving, barely breathing. I look up, Death stands off to the side, watching.
"Kara." His voice shakes. I land, walking around him so I can see his face.
"Please remove this." I hold out the arm with the shackle. I keep my sword level with his stomach as he removes it,"Thank you. I hope you don't mind that you owe me a favor." I turn and leap into the air, sheathing my sword. "Good bye."
