For Fate

"We have to find her." Chance sounds hurried.
"No, someone must pay." Chance waves his hand,"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Later." The vampire tries to respond but his voice no longer functioned as he wanted it to. Then the shadows left.
Thousands of the dark snakes filled the air around the palace before dispersing, I could no longer feel Fate in my mind. Chance curses softly, apparently me no longer being possessed was a bad thing, fun. Suddenly he and I are standing in, well we no longer seemed to have any set location. Destinations, places and buildings stumbled around, us swirling like the ocean see in a dream. Eventually our kaleidoscopic surroundings began to settle, marginally but we did no appear to be floating randomly through space anymore, so I take that as a plus.
"Chance, why have you brought her here? You I understand, but why her?"
"Statistics." Life nods hesitantly, accepting Chance's answer.
"Is she dead?"
Life hesitates,"Death is here, but he has yet to act."
"Good," Chance turns to me,"Kara, you can convince him to let her live. Right?"
"I don't know, I don't even really know what is going on. Isn't Fate immortal?"
"No, not really. Just mostly."
"That makes no sense."
Chance sighed,"She cannot be killed by a mortal blade, nor any mortal cause. Really only six things can strike her down, Death, Punishment, the Immortal's Plague, the Dream Killer, the Soul Finder, or the end of her Desert."
"And guess what hit her." Death replies.
"My guess, some form of projectile."
"Very good, which weapon?"
"I don't know!"
"Yes you do."
"Well there is no logical way it could have been that!"
"Chance," Death chastised gently,"You control the possibility of things, you know exactly how this could all play out, you know almost exactly how we got here. Do you still really think that there is no logical way that could have happened?"
"I know it did happen, I am simply appalled by how illogical it is."
"Illogical or not, here we stand."
"Where exactly is here?" I interject.
"Take a wild guess."
"I don't know, like a interdimentshional bridge, or a gap, maybe."
"No. Not even close."
"Oh."
"Please,"Chance whispers softly, interrupting our discussion,"I might not like her all the time but she is my sister." His eyes glisten with tears and his voice trembles,"She is my sister. Save her."
"Don't worry Chance, I won't let her go." Life growled.
"I was unaware you could dictate my actions Life." Death responds, glancing at her sideways.
"No, but I can remove the need of them."
"Sure." Death shrugs,"Give it a try."
As Life and Chance disappear into another room I ask Death,"I understand why Chance is protective of Fate, but why is Life?"
Death sighs slightly,"Those two will likely tear apart a world. Oh well, Life either has or had a thing for Fate. I'm not sure how she felt about Fate after she became a bit more... sadistic. Fate once just wanted everyone to be happy, but then they destroyed what she tried to give them. Others stepped in and as far as she was concerned ruined her utopia. So, she sought revenge, not directly, but revenge all the same. I'm not entirely sure what happened, or how Life feels but I'm fairly sure she at least had a romantic interest in Fate, if not has."
"Okay, that makes sense."
Silence falls,"Are you going to take her?"
"I don't know yet. Maybe not today, maybe another day."
"Couldn't Life just, I don't know, reanimate her or something?"
"She could try but," Death shook his head,"I don't think that is what she wants."
"Why?"
"Necromancy is difficult, not just for the spell caster, but for the one the spell is cast on. Their body ussualy starts to give out in them, much like a mortal form, it would really just be suffering until Fate was realesed. Or at least that is how things seem to work for immortals."
"She is immortal though, how would that work?"
Death shrugs,"Even I don't fully understand it. I know this though, immortal does not mean invincible, and Fate is simply immortal."
"Is she going to live?"
Death shivers slightly,"I selfishly hope so, Life is not someone you want to anger. For any reason, ever. Especially if you are me."
"What is that?" An ethral voice was echoing through the shifting halls, drawing yet replusing me at the same time.
"Life, she is trying to heal Fate. Can't you feel it, the Desert, it's shifting."
"Shifting power? Shifting how?"
"I'm not quite sure, it's just shifting."
I simply nod, still unsure of what he meant, though I did feel odd. No, enchanted is a far better description of this, this feeling, it was as though someone held me high above a quaking world, yet my feet never left the ground.
"Oh, this again." Death shrugged nonchalantly,"I'll give her more time."
The quaking stopped, yet still I was untouched by gravity,"What is going on?" The world was whipping past my eyes, faster and faster, twirling around me and whipping my hair into my face.
Silence, echoing, eternal silence,"For Fate." A tear laden voice whispers softly. The quaking stops and our surrounding slow their endless dance, barely moving as the ground covers away from our feet.
"Life?" Another voice asks softly.
"Well, this is my cue to leave." Death said, walking out one of the shifting hallways,"See ya later Kara."
"Yeah, bye." I wave as Chance walks back into the room.
"Is he gone?"
"Yeah."
"Good." Then I am standing back in my fortress, the memory of what had happened quickly faded, starting to resemble the memory of a long ago dream. I continued to free people from the Desert, only sometimes, I started to wonder if I was doing it for Fate.
