The Banquet turned out to be a bunch of aristocrats showing off their power and influence over this twisted dimension. Fate had us serve the massive table of the banquet, and I was stuck serving Victor. The after math was far more interesting.
After the banquet had ended various immortals (ish) left quickly, trying to avoid those who had enjoyed a bit to much drink, only to find the exits wouldn't open. Every exit was tried, even the windows, none of them shifted at all. People started to panic, fearing imprisonment. Suspicion flourished, eventually the culprit was found. The guilty party was none other than Chance.
"Hey Kara."
I simply glare at him,"Ouch, I expected a warmer greeting."
"So, am I merely a casualty in your war to you?"
"Oh, right. That. Ummm..."
His hesitant manner answered the question quickly,"No. You are a statistic."
I raise one eye brow,"Well, one statistic actually, one that you determined."
"You have my attention."
"Why, thank you my dear."
"Just cut to the chase."
"Fine. Your destiny has been altered, not to much, but enough..."
"Enough for..." I let the sentence end as one of the infuriated guests walks away,"Do you plan on letting anyone leave anytime soon?"
"Nope. They are luck they can leave this room."
"I see."
"Anyways, you. Originally had been meant to complete the prophecy, save the Desert. Blah blah blah. All that right, well now,"Chance grins wickedly,"You will be able to rival me, Malum, maybe even Fate in power. Want to know the best part?"
"Sure."
"Fate has no clue. And no she can't hear your thoughts right now. It really annoys her when I pull stuff like this."
"So you do it often?"
Chance shrugged,"Sometimes."I playfully shove him,"Okay, okay, I do this kind of thing frequently."
"Thought so." I reply, grinning.
Suddenly everyone screams and runs around haphazardly,"I, however can take no credit for what ever just happened."Victor lay on the ground in what I can only guess was a vampire version of blood based on the red tint it carried. That and the fact that a bunch if the stuff flowed from a wound in his cheat caused by someone having driven a wooden steak into his heart. Tension rose as people looked for the culprit in the locked up palace that was quickly starting to resemble a prision,"Who did this?" A thunderous voice returned fear to the over used phrase.
Fear was in every face as the man who I can only guess was Victor's father stormed into the room to confront Fate,"We do not yet know sir. There is an investigation underway now."
"An investigation?" The vampire roared in outrage,"Why not simply solve this the easy was Fate?" His eyes flashed angrily.
"You know why."
"I believe that the situation justifies the set limitations."
"Take it to the High Council."
"Why? I can take it to you instead and you are so much more fun to deal with."
"Bite me."
The vampire raises one eyebrow,"Really, you want to go that route?"
Fate offered her wrist to him,"We will do this your way. That is far easier than a war ravaging my Desert."
"Somehow I knew you would agree." The vampire grins and gently sinks his fangs into her wrist. Hissing softly as gold colored blood welled from the wound, the vampire pulled away quickly as Fate crouched over Victor's inert form.
"What is she doing?"
"Invading the final memories his mind recorded."
"So his murder?"
"Yeah."
"How can she do that?" I whisper in awe as Fate remains perfectly still, bleeding wrist dripping onto Victor' s forehead.
"Magic."
"No, how does she really do it?"
"She is almost immortal."
"That explains nothing."
"She and the other members of the so called 'High Council' all of them have that power, hence why her blood is gold."
"Oh, so how long does this take? Approximately?"
"Uh, I don't really know." Chance replied honestly,"I think it varies. She never really told me much about it. Like she feared me."
"Maybe she should." Chance raises one eyebrow skeptically but says nothing.
When Fate finally stands she appears to have rather not seen what ever Victor saw in the last moments of his life,"So, who did it?" The vampire asks.
Fate hesitates as though weighing the consequences of her answer,"You,"she points one shaking finger towards someone in the crowd,"Come here."
"She isn't telling him the truth, or at least not all of it." Chance whispers as the crowd shifts and Fate, the vampire and the supposed culprit are surrounded by people.
"What makes you say that?"
"Not sure, just a bit feeling." I simply nod, slowly becoming lost in thought.
Suddenly the crowd pulls back with a gasp and Fate is standing perfectly still, the side of her face turning red. The crowed ohhhed in anticipation, Chance cursed softly beside me, a near identical mark blooming on his cheek.
"What happened to you?"
"Fate is mad at me, so I have deal with some of her pain. She thinks this is my fault."
I was about to growl a response when a shriek shatters the silence before falling silent half way through,"What was that?"
"Fate?!" Chance panicked.
"What's wrong?" I hurry after him.
"Fate!" She lay crumpled on the floor, molten gold covering the ground around her.
"Is she dead?"
"No, I don't think so. At least not yet."
I didn't feel much for Fate, but Chance was starting to become someone who I could trust.
"What should we do?"
"You do nothing." Chance lifts his eyes from his fallen sister to meet the eyes of the towering woman infront of us.
"Life..."
"I know Chance, I know." We back away from the fallen Fate and vampire. Life eminated a soft glow, obscuring her features as she lifts Fate' s inert form. Molten gold covered Fate, some running down her face, not unlike shimmering tears before disappearing in a blinding flash of light.
"So what now?"
"Someone must pay." The vampire growls, murder hidden in his cold eyes.
