"Take a left here." Jayden instructs as I drive down through the dark side of his suburb. The streetlights are faint and all the houses appear dark, almost like no one lives in any of the houses. I take the sharp left and I continue slowly down the street as Jayden continues to instruct me.
"I'm so pissed I didn't take my bike to school." Jayden says under his breath, "fuckers smashed my bike last week."
"Who did?" I ask, hoping I don't appear nosey.
"The group of guys that approached us in the diner. They denied it but I know they smashed it, who else would've?'" Jayden questions.
"I don't know, you have heaps of enemies, could've been anyone." I say, shrugging.
"I wasn't asking you." Jayden sneers. I have the sudden urge to slam my foot on the breaks and make him walk the rest of the way home, but I'm too nice to do that. I keep my mouth shut the rest of the way to his house, trying not to piss him off for any reason.
Jayden finally directs me to his house but I can barely see it, none of the lights are on inside the house. "Alright well, thank you." Jayden says, opening the car door and stepping out of the car, "and hey, we'll keep looking for your mum."
I sigh and nod, "alright but it's no use."
"We will find her, don't worry." Jayden reassures but I doubt him. "Anyway, goodnight Morgan. I'll see you at school next Monday." Jayden winks, and closes the passenger door before going inside his house. I drive off, and head home.
I slide my key in the front door and slowly open it, making sure no one hears me arrive home at such a late time during the night. Well to my dad nine p.m is late, especially on a school night.
"Morgan, you're home late." I hear my dad say behind me and I stop in my tracks. "Where were you?" My dad questions.
"I was just out with Mel, we went out for dinner." I lie, shutting the front door behind me and locking it.
"Hmmm, okay." My dad replies and smiles before he walks off back to his study. I sigh from relief as he walks away. I make my way up to my room and I notice my sister perched on my bed.
"Morgan, close the door." Millie insists, and I close the door behind me.
"What is it?" I ask my sister.
"I saw what happened today, at school." Millie says quietly. "Oh." Is all I manage to say as I start to feel embarrassed.
"We could get those assholes back by burning down their houses!" Millie says breaking the awkward silence as I pretend to fiddle with my school books on my desk. "I'm kidding, nah but really we should get them back."
"No, I'm not going to retaliate." I say, hoping she drops the subject now. "It's just going to make things worse, and I can't handle it getting any worse."
"Okay fine." Millie says sighing and lying down on my bed. "Also, I've got some news about..Mark."
I look around to face Millie, "what kind of news?" I ask and she smiles.
"We, you know." Millie says, and for a moment I have no idea what she is referring too.
"You what?" I ask, then suddenly realising what she means. "Oh shit! Really? Well, how was it?" I ask, joining her on the bed and watching her instantly laugh.
"It was okay, we've been dating for a year you know? So we finally thought the time was right." Millie says grabbing my hand. Millie is sixteen, she started dating Mark just before her fifteenth birthday and they have been inseparable since. I have always been slightly envious of her relationship with Mark. I have always wanted someone to love me the way he loves her. Just the way he looks at her when she's talking to him, I have always wanted someone to stare at me like that. Mark treats her the best, and I couldn't be more happy for her.
