Chapter 1
I was late. Once again.
I ran as fast as I could, brushing past someone who swore at me a few seconds after, but I ignore their insult and I keep my eyes on the school gate. I quickly run over the road and a car swerves in front of me, a split second off almost killing me. No time for this now, Morgan. The car can wait. I flash the driver my middle finger and I continue to bolt to my school. I make it to the gate and I rattle it, but it doesn't seem to budge. Locked. I look around the fence for anything to climb under or through, but to my luck the only option I have is climbing the two-meter-high fence.
I swing my school bag over the fence, watching it land on the other side. I jump up against the fence and using all my strength to pull myself up and over it. I fall to the other side hitting the ground with a THUD. I lay in the dirt for a few seconds then I wipe my skinny jeans and grab my school bag, running to where my class is. I've missed forty minutes of class and I'm on my last lateness strike, which means I'll get a detention after school.
I walk slowly to the senior locker hallway as I begin to feel a throbbing pain in my back. First, I burnt my neck with the curling iron, now this. Great. I kick my bag into my locker and I grab any book for the period I'm late to along with my pencil case. I hurry off down the hallway. Mel will probably strangle me for leaving her alone in first period, like always.
I barge through the door and I feel my legs give way too quickly as I slip onto my ass and slide in the classroom. Everyone is dead silent as I lay on the cold wet floor with my book and the contents of my pencil case scattered all over the floor. The pain in my back is immense and now my ass hurts from the slip. I push myself off the floor and the whole classroom fills with laughter. I sneak a look at Mel and I even see her laughing.
I get off the floor and I place my hand onto my wet bum. My bum is soaking with water, or whatever it is. My face flushes red and the whole class is laughing at me. I feel mortified. I struggle to stand up as the teacher walks over to me, obviously mad at me for my late and loud entrance.
"Well, first off all Morgan. You're late, and your entrance into the classroom earned you an after-school detention." The teacher says to me and the almost slip again at what she said. I saw it coming, but not for my slipping entrance. I manage to not say a word and just stand in front of the classroom with my mouth wide open and my hand on my wet bum. My hand comes off soaking with what doesn't seem to be water. "Can I just ask, what was on the floor?" I manage to blurt out to the teacher and she gives me a humorous glare.
"Oh, we had a chemical spill this morning. As you probably didn't see the sign saying, 'wet floor, caution'." The teacher says, she points to the yellow sign saying that the floor was slippery, with some kind of wet chemical used in the science department.
I feel that my bum is beginning to tingle as I realize I've just squashed the liquid down to my skin. I shift uneasy and I realize that the chemicals are not meant to come in contact with my skin. "Can I go to the nurse's office?" I ask, and teacher just shakes her head and she looks away from me.
"Morgan, please go take a seat. We can discuss this at recess." The teacher says turning her back to me and facing the whiteboard. My ass suddenly starts burning and I yelp almost slipping again.
"Please! It burns!!" I shout, and everyone begins laughing again at me as I start gripping onto my burning ass. I begin jumping around like a frog as I feel my skinny jeans rip and my ass continues to burn.
"Get out of here! Now!" The teacher shouts to me and I run out of the classroom as I hear everyone's laughs roar as I run into the hallway. I find the nurse's office after I spent fifteen minutes looking around the dim hallways like I was lost. I feel lost, but the nurse's office was only right in front of me, and I missed it. I open the door and I look around her office, but I can't seem to find anyone in my room. I sigh, and I run over to the fridge where they keep the ice packs. I grab two ice packs and plunk myself down onto the small bed. The nurse comes through the door soon enough and she looks over to me and gives me a confused look. "Are you alright?" She asks me, and I nod with a sigh.
"Yes. First In the morning I burnt my neck with the curler. Then I was late for school this morning and I jumped over the fence and I fell onto my back. Then, I ran into class and I slipped over a puddle of chemicals which is now burning a hole through my jeans." I say finishing with a defeated sigh and she stares at me for a few seconds before bursting out into laughter.
"That's the best story I've heard all day." She says as she continues to laugh. She looks at my bored face and she stops laughing. "Anyway, once your bum feels better you should go back to class." She says but as she finishes her sentence the bell rings. "Or not, you can sit in here." She says before she walks out the door and shuts it behind her. I relax on the hard bed and I lay back, closing my eyes.
I don't know how long I slept for, but I must have slept through the whole school day since the hallways are empty along with the classrooms. I check my phone and see that I've missed ten minutes of my detention. The nurse hasn't been back since into the room, so I feel that my bum is completely frozen from the ice pack and I can barely move. Now it feels worse than how it did three hours ago.
"What took you so long to get home? You with your boyfriend?!" Millie chants on and I laugh in her face at the thought of a boyfriend.
"No, I was in detention." I say and her face falls. I shut the front door behind me and I slip off my shoes. I see the TV running, so I take a seat on the couch and I focus on the TV while Millie takes a seat next to me. On the TV it shows a gang breaking into the local pharmacy and trying to steal medicine, including money.
"Gang from your school?" Millie asks, and I nod as I recognize who the boys are.
"I would stay away from them, If I was you." Millie says.
I nod, keeping my eyes on the TV showing one of the boys getting handcuffed and pushed into a police van. "Don't worry, everyone stays away from them.".
