"Alright, gentlemen let's run it again!" I yell at my men to run the practice again. They are supposed to clear a house with hostages.
"Yes, Sir!" my men yell back.
I stand on the platform watching my men clear room by room in the house. We moved the hostages to another room this time so they don't know what room they are in and that helps with their practice.
My name is Derek Heaton and I am in the US Army Delta unit. I am a lieutenant and my team has five men. I'm 34 years old, 6'1" and well built.
I look at the timer just as the boys finish clearing the house and I make sure that they got the right people out. They walk back over to me and I nod at them.
"How was that Lieutenant?" Mark asks me when they reach me.
"Better! You cut four minutes off of the normal time", Mark fist pumps at that information, "You guys did good at clearing the room and turning the corners. We are getting better and in the next one, I'll join and see how well we'll do then", I inform them.
It has been an exhausting three days of practice for us and right when I am going to talk to my men about starting practice again today, my phone starts ringing and I put a finger up to tell the boys to hold on.
"Lieutenant Heaton", I said through the phone.
"Hello, Derek. It's your aunt Lisa", I smile hearing my aunt's voice.
"Hey, Aunt Lisa", I say and my boys look at me confused because I never talk to or about family when I'm around them.
"I am calling to ask if you know anything about Niykee", she asks me and my breath hitches in my throat.
"W-why", I clear my throat and my boys look at me weirdly again, "Why? What about her?" I ask in a stronger voice.
She sighs, "I'm worried about her. Your father cut all ties with us when your mom passed away and every time I do get a hold of him he sounds drunk and tells me to stay out of his business", she explains. I feel like I can't breathe so I sit down. I run my hand though my hair as my chest is getting tighter by the minute.
I may not know my sister but the fact that she might be hurt because of my dad is killing me.
"Derek, you are the only one he won't see coming. You need to go check on her. I wouldn't ask you if it wasn't important", I nod at this information.
"What am I supposed to say when I see her? Oh, hi! I'm your big brother but I left because dad was a bitch?" I snap. I feel someone put their hand on my shoulder for comfort and I look up to see Mark.
"Are you aware of your father's abusive side?" she asks me and anger boils inside me.
"He was known to lose his temper from time to time but I fail to see what that has got to do with my baby sister", I almost yell in the phone. Mark grips my shoulder harder to calm me down.
"I think your father has been abusing her for a while now and the last time I saw her she was so jumpy", she says calmly but worry laced her voice.
I am speechless at her words but recover fast.
"He what?" I yell in the phone and now the guys look really worried.
"Please, Derek! You are the only one who can do this. He wouldn't think you would just show up out of nowhere", she says calmly but pleadingly.
I shake my head, "I'll be there as soon as I can. I'm stationed in California so it will take some time; maybe about three days or so but I will be there. Do you know where he is at right know?" I ask her.
