"Akoni! How many times do I have to tell you about leaving tissue on the bathroom floor! I'm tired, bring your ass"
Jasmine couldn't help this battle. Jasmine watched as her best friend was dragged by her hair out the room.
Jasmine would put cotton balls in her ears so she didn't have to listen to Akoni's screams
She didn't understand why Miss Sally beat Akoni the most.
Akoni stood bare with her hands and legs spread. Miss Sally hit anywhere the belt wanted to until she was tired. After the beating she threw her in the closet. A day turned into a week. A week with no food. All she got was water. When she was finally let out the closet she was so weak. On this very day it would have been different if her parents were still around. Today would have been filled with laughter, cake, ice cream and a whole lot of presents. Akoni even forgot it was her birthday.
She climbed in the cold bath washing away the crusted blood. She bites her lip so she doesn't cry out from the belt marks that still look fresh on her red skin. She use to be a walnut color due to her Hawaiian and African American heritage. But her skin is turning lighter from the lack of sun she gets now.
She gets out the shower drying as fast as she can. Putting on her holey t shirt with some yoga pants that fit to big.
She opens the door looking both ways before dashing to her and Jasmine's room. Jasmine jumps up when she sees her walk in.
Jasmine locks the door before going to the hidden food. She grabs some chips and juice giving it to Akoni.
Akoni doesn't say anything as she eats and drinks the chips quickly.
Jasmine puts the trash in the bin at the bottom. She returns to the bed wrapping herself and Akoni in the cover before they fall asleep.
"Happy birthday to me"
