*Alison's POV*
It has been roughly a year since Jake bought us the house and everything has been great so far. Jake and I have been dating for almost two years now and we've grown even closer if that's even possible. I guess it's because since I live with him now, I've learned that I can always confide in him. As cheesy as this sounds, he's basically my ride or die. My love for him continues to grow stronger each day and I wouldn't have it any other way. It's the month of February and tomorrow is my birthday! It's the day that I officially turn 18! I swear ever since the beginning of February, Jake's been acting on edge. It's kind of starting to get annoying. Even though this has happened before, I see all the white flags waving around furiously in my head. Ugh, boys are so confusing! I glanced at the clock with a sigh, noticing that it was almost 7 o'clock. A loud growling noise came from my stomach and I clenched onto it as a reflex. I guess I should make myself some dinner. Who knows when Jake's coming home. I pulled myself up from the couch and made my way to the kitchen. I dug around in the cabinets and took out a pack of spaghetti noodles followed by a large pot. I filled the pot with water and set it on the stove, waiting for it to boil. While I waited for the pot to come to a boil, I went ahead and took out an onion, peppers, and a jar of tomato sauce. I took out a chopping board and set it down on the counter. Once I washed the peppers and onion, I got right to work. Once I chopped up the onion and peppers, I added them to another pot along with the tomato sauce. I went ahead and set the pot on the stove and set it on a low heating setting so that it could be brought to a low simmer. When I heard the sound of water boiling, I added the spaghetti noodles in the boiling water and brought it down just a little bit.
While I was waiting for the noodles and the sauce to be done, I sat down at the kitchen table and let my troubling thoughts drown me. Where the heck is Jake? He's been gone all day. Maybe he's patrolling? No, if he was, he'd be back by now. Even though there are times that he has long patrol shifts, they don't last THIS long. This has been happening quite a lot and it's starting to bug me. Without hesitation, I picked up my phone and began dialing Jake's number. I frowned when it went straight to voicemail. I groaned in frustration and slammed my phone down on the table. I checked on the noodles and noticed that they were just about done. I grabbed the strainer bowl and dumped the noodles in the bowl. I brought the bowl under the faucet and ran cool water over the noddles to rinse them off. When they were rinsed off, I placed the noodles in a different dish. I turned the stove off once I saw the sauce was done as well. I went ahead and grabbed a bag of frozen spinach from the freezer and prepared it. I added a little bit of butter to it and put a lid on the pot to let it cook. The sound of a door opening and closing brought me to my attention.
"I'm back," the painfully familiar voice called out. I heard the sound of his footsteps come into the kitchen and soon felt a pair of warm arms wrap around my waist.
"Hey, babe," Jake murmured into the skin of my neck. I wiggled out of his grip and lifted the lid off from the pot of spinach.
"Dinner's ready," I stated curtly. Jake frowned at my attitude but nonetheless made himself a plate and I made myself one as well. I set two glasses of ice water on the table and we both dug into our meal. The dinner was filled with complete silence. The only noise was the scraping of forks against the plate along with the ice clinking in the glass. I could sense Jake's discomfort, but I was in no mood for making conversation. The silence was so thick, you wouldn't be able to cut it with a steak knife! Okay, I'm exaggerating a little bit, but you know what I mean.
"So, how was your day?" Jake's voice brought me out of my thoughts.
"Good," I said as I stared down at the wooden table surface like it was the most fascinating thing in the world.
