*Alison's POV*

I was currently at school in chorus class with Angela and our teacher wasn't here, so we basically had a free period. I kept thinking back to how weird Jake was acting this morning. He claimed that he wasn't able to come into school today since he had "things" to take care of. I had no idea what that meant. At first, I thought it was code talk for having to do patrol, but if that were the case, he would've just told me. Not only that, but before Jake dropped me off at school, I was at his house and I overheard him and Billy talking, but they were talking so slow I wasn't able to hear them. I could only make out the words "soon" and "mom's ring". When I questioned Jake about it, of course, he acted like he didn't know what I was talking about. It was making me feel uneasy just thinking about what he could be hiding from me. I was brought out of my thoughts with someone gently shaking my shoulder. I looked over to meet Angela's worry-filled brown eyes staring at me.

"Are you okay?" she asked with her voice filled with genuine concern. I sighed and decided to tell her the truth. We've grown pretty close ever since I've moved here.

"Honestly, no. Jake was acting pretty weird this morning when he dropped me off at school this morning," I confessed.

"What do you mean by that?" she questioned with furrowed eyebrows.

"Well, earlier this morning when I was at his house, I overheard him and his dad talking, but they were talking so low I wasn't able to pick up anything. Then, when I tried confronting Jake about it, he just shrugged me off, saying that he didn't know what I was talking about," I sighed in frustration.

"Hm, that sounds strange. What do you think he's up to?" she asked.

"I honestly have no clue," I shrugged as I ran a hand through my hair.

"Why don't you try talking to him?" she suggested.

"Hm, that sounds like a good idea. I'll do it after school," I said with my voice full of determination and she gave me a smile of encouragement.

***************************************

I stood in front of Jake's door with anxiety pumping through my veins. Well, Ali, it's now or never. With a shaky hand, I knocked on the door. I waited for what seemed like hours until the door swung open to reveal Billy. He greeted me with a kind smile to which I gladly returned.

"Ali! Nice to see you," he smiled.

"You as well, Billy. You as well," I said as I bent down to hug him.

"What brings you by?" he asked.

"I was wondering if Jake was around," I said as I fiddled with my fingers and my heart dropped when the smile that was on his face immediately vanished.

"I'm afraid he's not here," he said with a grim expression.

"Do you know where he is? I'm sorry if I'm coming off as nosy," I bashfully smiled.

"Oh no no! That's quite alright. He just had some things he needed to take care of, but when he gets back, I'll make sure he knows you stopped by," Billy said. What the heck does he mean by "things to take care of"?! Ugh, this is getting old real quick.

"Oh, okay. See you later, Billy," I waved half-heartedly and started walking back home. When I got home, I went straight up to my room and slammed the door. I dropped down on the bed and stared up at the ceiling. What on earth could Jake be hiding from me? Is he seeing someone behind my back? I immediately shook my head in denial. No, there's no way that he'd do a thing like that. I mentally slapped myself for thinking something like that. I glanced down at my phone that was sitting in my hand. Should I call him? What if he doesn't answer. Eh, I'll call anyway. I need answers. I unlocked my phone and immediately went to my contacts. I didn't hesitate to click on his name and watched as his picture came up as I made the call. The phone immediately went straight to voicemail, making me furrow my eyebrows in confusion. What the hell?  Brushing off the strange feeling in the pit of my stomach, I re-dialed only for it to go straight to voicemail once again. I felt tears start to burn my eyes, but I quickly brushed them away. No, Ali, don't cry. You're stronger than this. I felt anger slowly start to fill my body as I sent him a text message and let my thumbs violently tap away on the screen.
