"Phoenix Aurora Sky. Where in gods name have you been?" Aurora Wakely-Sky, my mom, stepped into the hall as I attempted to close our old beaten door quietly. Obviously that didn't work.
"Mom, I told you I'd rather be called Sky. Besides, it's only..." I trailed off, looking down at my silver bracelet type watch. "Half past nine." I raised an eyebrow suspiciously at her, she didn't care where I went, not as long as I was back before 11.
"But Summer-" She stopped abruptly, realizing the mistake of mentioning my lost friend.
All emotion was wiped off my face and I turned to stone. A quick 'Night' and I was up over the stairs and locked in my room. Not two minutes of solace and The Stereos' Summer Girl was playing, indicating I had a text message. I smiled at a memory, Summer was fiddling with my phone and next thing I knew I had Summer Girl as my ring tone. She said it was so I would always think of her. My heart ached.
I forced myself off my soft brown bed, and over to my desk. Shutting off the song the memory faded, leaving nothing. The message was from Belle.
'R U alright? At the police station 2day... U up and left so fast, & now U won't answer me ☹'
Sure enough, I had another dozen messages from her, and one from Sam. He cared about me, but knew enough to give me some space.
It was a Friday night, I decided to make a three way call. First up, Belle. Sam wouldn't want to listen to all the girl stuff she had to force me through first. She picked up on the first ring.
"JEEZ WOMAN ARE YOU ALRIGHT? WHAT THE HELL I THOUGHT I LOST YOU TOO I-" I nearly jumped, but this was to be expected from her, the drama queen she is. I help the phone away from my ear and shouted back to her.
"AH SHUT UP, I'M FINE." My voice lowered. "I just left my phone at home, I was gone for some coffee."
"Coffee? Coffee my ass hun." She said more reasonably. "I know you, you were out looking for Summer weren't you? You know, that motorcycle you have really isn't good for you, in more ways than one."
"No, well- I drove over that way, I might have passed by-" I sighed. "Yes. And I know, but I love it just the same." I said, the ghost of what would have been a smile under other circumstances in my voice.
"Well I wanted to know if you're okay, which you're obviously not. And neither am I. This is gonna be hard on all of us, and all we can do is pray to the lord we'll find her, and be here for each other when we need to talk." Belle said in her 'reasonable adult voice', as we liked to call it.
"I'm calling Sam." I said without question.
"Of course you are." She said it like she knew me better than myself.
But no one knew me better than me, I thought as I dialled Sam's number, known by heart. No one knows how I can barely keep up my stone walls, and that inside my mind was a roiling pit of turmoil.
"Hello? Ph- er, Sky?" Unsure still on what to call me, I only made the decision to be called Sky a few weeks ago.
"And your fave person ever!" Belle chirped.
"Okay this obviously is about today, and it's obviously bad. I'm just coming over to your house, Sky." He said that last part uncertainly. "You better come too Belle."
With that he hung up, not giving us a chance to disagree.
"Be right there." Belle quickly said, she too disconnected before I could argue.
Not ten minutes later and they bother barged into my room. They too had their own motorcycles. What can I say, we live in a small town.
My face was again wiped of emotion, Belle recognised right away and rushed over to me. Her long black hair felt like a sheet of satin against my face as she pulled me in for a hug. Sam stood awkwardly in the door, hugging seeming too feminine for someone who's nothing more than a friend. I locked eyes with him as the most unfit words I ever heard left Belle's mouth.
"Oh Sky, it'll be alright." She said more to herself, as she began to cry.
Sam looked at me with understanding before I too, silently broke down into tears I saved for my most lonesome nights.
This was one phoenix who got her name from looks, and looks alone. Phoenixes should be fierce, fiery, and full of passion. Phoenixes don't cry, and they fight for what they've lost.
