Freya's POV
Frodo and I are at the green dragon again. Sam sits with us while Merry and Pippin were dancing. It's been a day since Uncle and Gandalf left. Frodo and I are just trying to get back to our normal routine. I hear Merry and Pippin start singing, and smile.
"Hey ho, to the bottle I go!
To heal my heart and drown my woe.
Rain may fall and wind may blow.
But there still be -
many miles to go!Sweet is the sound of the pouring rain,
and the stream that falls from hill to plain.
Better than rain or rippling brook —" they sing."Is a mug of beer inside this Took!" Pippin finishes. Just then the table next to us starts to talk about strange folk being about. While Sam smokes his pipe and looks at Rosie, who gives him a huge smile. Frodo continues to drink his tankard of ale while I stick to water.
"We should leave soon, it's getting late" I tell the pair.
"She's right Mister Frodo" Sam states.
"Let me finish this and we can go" he assures us. Frodo finishes his ale and we leave a tip. Rosie said goodbye to us and we do the same. Sam gave a drunk hobbit an annoyed look when he spoke to Rosie. "Don't worry, Sam. Rosie knows an idiot when she sees one" Frodo tells him.
"Does she?" Sam asks.
"She does" I assure him.
"Goodnight Sam" Frodo says and I nod my head in agreement.
"Goodnight Mister Frodo and Miss Freya" Sam says before returning to his house. I help Frodo walk home. When we enter the house we see the curtains moving and freeze. We'd shut the windows before we left, the curtains shouldn't be moving. Frodo and I enter cautiously. There seems to be no sign of life, but a hand descends on our shoulder sfrom behind. We jump, gasping and turn around. It is Gandalf, he looks wild and disheveled.
"Is it secret?! Is it safe?!" he asks Frodo firmly. Frodo opens a chest in the hallway and rummages through it, tossing out scrolls and other items in the process. He finds the sealed envelope he left there. He hands it to Gandalf who chucks it in the fire.
"What are you doing?" Frodo and I demand. The envelope is rapidly consumed by the flames, revealing the Ring inside. Gandalf gets a pair of tongs and picks up the Ring as Frodo watches.
"Hold out your hand Frodo, it's quite cool" Gandalf tells him.He drops the Ring on Frodo's hand. Gandalf stands up and turns away from the fire."What can you see? Can you see anything?" he asks.
Frodo and I look at the ring as he turns it with his fingers. "No, there's nothing..." I start to say when words in a different language appear.
"Wait. There are markings" Frodo states. The runes are reflected on Frodo's and my face as we try to puzzle them out."It's some form of Elvish. I can't read it" he tells Gandalf.
"There are few who can. The language is that of Mordor, which I will not utter here" Gandalf tells us.
"Mordor?" we asks confused.
"In the common tongue it says, 'One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them. One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them'" Gandalf explains.
"I'll go make some tea" I say absentmindedly. Once I prepared the tea we all sat at the dinner table with the ring in front of us. "Gandalf what can you tell us of this ring?" I ask as I sip my tea.
"This is the One Ring. Forged by the Dark Lord Sauron in the fires of Mount Doom. Taken by Isildur from the hand of Sauron himself" he explains.
"Bilbo found it. In Gollum's cave" Frodo states.
"Yes. For sixty years the Ring lay quiet in Bilbo's keeping, prolonging his life, delaying old age. But no longer Frodo. Evil is stirring in Mordor. The Ring has awoken. It's heard its master's call" Gandalf explains.
"But Sauron was destroyed long ago" I remind him.
"No Freya, The spirit of Sauron endured. His life force is bound to the Ring, and the Ring survived. Sauron has returned. His Orcs have multiplied. His fortress at Barad-Dûr is rebuilt in the land of Mordor. Sauron needs only this Ring to cover all the lands of a second darkness" he states. "He is seeking it, seeking it — all his thought is bent on it. The Ring yearns above all else to return to the hand of its master. They are one, the Ring and the Dark Lord. Frodo, he must never find it" he explains.
Frodo stands up and grabs the Ring. He walks down the corridor."All right, we put it away. We keep it hidden. We never speak of it again. No one knows it's here, do they? Do they Gandalf?" he asks.
"There is one other who knew that Bilbo had the Ring. I looked everywhere for the creature Gollum. But the enemy found him first. I don't know how long they tortured him. But amidst the endless screams and inane babble, they discerned two words..." Gandalf explains.
"Shire, Baggins. But that would lead them here" I state as I hug Frodo. "No one is going to hurt my baby brother" I say firmly. Frodo then holds the ring out to Gandalf, telling him to take it. "You must take it" I tell him.
"You cannot offer me this Ring" Gandalf states.
"I'm giving it to you" Frodo tells him.
"Don't tempt me Frodo! I dare not take it. Not even to keep it safe. Understand Frodo, I would use this Ring from a desire to do good. But through me, it would wield a power too great and terrible to imagine" Gandalf explains.
"But it cannot stay in the Shire" I remind him.
"No, it can't" he agrees.
"What must I do?" Frodo asks.
"You aren't going anywhere without me" I snap. "What must we do?" I ask Gandalf. He tells us we must leave the Shire and Frodo gave me some of his spare clothes to wear. The wild is no place for a dress. I pack some healing herbs, water skin, some food, boots, a small dagger and grab my cloak.
"Where must we go?" I hear Frodo ask as I rejoin them.
"Get out of the Shire. Make for the village Bree" Gandalf states.
"Bree, what about you?" I ask.
"I'll be waiting for you, at the Inn of the Prancing Pony" he assures us.
"And the Ring will be safe there?" Frodo asks.
"I don't know Frodo. I don't have any answers. I must see the head of my order. He is both wise and powerful. Trust me Frodo, he'll know what to do.You'll have to leave the name of Baggins behind you, for that name is not safe outside the Shire.Travel only by day. And stay off the road" Gandalf instructs and we nod our heads.
"We can cut across country easily enough" I assure him. Gandalf suddenly tells us to get down and we do so.As he goes to the window, peers out cautiously then gives the bushes a whack with his staff. An 'oofff!' is heard from the object of the whack. Gandalf drags the offender up by his hair and plops him onto the table.
"Confound it all Samwise Gamgee! Have you been eavesdropping?!" Gandalf and I demand.
"I haven't dropped no eaves sir, honest. I was just cutting the grass under the window there, if you follow me" he tells Gandalf. Turns out he heard most of our conversation and it was decided, he'd accompany Frodo and I.
Early dawn on the following morning, Gandalf, Frodo, Sam and I make our way along the road. Sam, encumbered with pots and pans, puffs along behind Gandalf's horse. Gandalf tells us to be careful saying Sauron has spies everywhere. Then tells Frodo to never put on the ring. Before he rides off, leaving us in the forest. We stare at each other. Eventually Frodo sighs, takes up his walking stick and continues on our journey. With Sam and I following him.
