Freys's POV
We left the throne room. "Mordor" Pippin says and I look to see the burning mountain.
"Yes, there it lies. This city has dwelt ever in the sight of its shadow" Gandalf states.
"A storm is coming" I state as I look up at the sky.
"This is not the weather of the world. This is the device of of Sauron's making. A broil of fumes he sends ahead of his host. The Orcs of Mordor have no love of daylight. So he covers the face of the sun to ease their passage along the road to war. When the shadow of Mordor reaches this city, it will begin" Gandalf explains.
"Well… Minas Tirith. Very impressive. So where are we off to next?" Pippin asks Gandalf.
"Oh it's too late for that, Peregrin. There's no leaving this city. Help must come to us" Gandalf tells him. But will we survive long enough for help to arrive and will help arrive in time?
(Next day)
Gandalf and I are in Pippin's room as he puts on his new clothes. I myself have bathed and put on a dress a maid had provided. I am looking out the window with Gandalf.
"So, I imagine this is just a ceremonial position . . . I mean, they don't actually expect me to do any fighting . . . do they?" Pippin asks us.
"You're in the service of the Steward now - you're going to have to do as you're told, Peregrin Took" I tell him.
"Guard of the Citedal" Gandalf grumbles.
"It's so quiet" Pippin says as he joins us looking up at the sky.
"It is" I agree.
"It's the deep breath before the plunge" Gandalf states.
"I don't want to be in a battle . . . but waiting on the edge of one I can't escape is even worse" Pippin says and I wrap an arm around his shoulders in comfort.
"Stick with me, I'll keep you safe cousin" I assure him. He smiles in gratitude. "Gandalf, is there any hope for Frodo and Sam?" I ask him as we look at Mordor.
"There never was much hope, just a fools hope" he answers.
"I'm positive they'll succeed, as long as they stay true to each other" I state remembering the words Lady Galadriel had said when we arrived in Lothlorien. That feels like si long ago now.
"Our enemy is almost ready, his full strength gathered. Not only Ores, but men as well" Gandalf tells us. "This will be the end of Gondor as we know it. Here the hammerstroke will fall hardest" he adds.
"If the river is taken, if the garrison at Osgiliath falls, the last defence of this city will be gone" I state.
"But we have the White Wizard. That's got to count for something" Pippin states.
"Sauron has yet to reveal his deadliest servant . . . The one who will lead Mordor's armies in war, the one they say no living man can kill" Gandalf tells us.
"Do you mean the Witchking of Angmar?" I ask him and he nods his head.
"He is the Lord of the Nazgul - the greatest of the nine" he states. "The board is set, pieces are moving" he says. We leave room and work through the streets of Minas Tirith.
"Peregrin Took, my lad, there is a task to be done. Another opportunity for one of the Shire-folk to prove their great worth" Gandalf tells him.
"You must not fail us Pippin" I add. "I'd go, but I cannot in this dress. Hurry" I tell him and he runs to go lit the beacon. "He'll succeed" I state.
"I'm sure he will" Gandalf states. "I had had new clothes delivered to your room with armor for the battle. Your weapons have been tended to abd your medicine bag restocked. Keep it with you" he explains.
We look up to see Pippin climbing the cliffside towards the beacon. Out of sight of the two guards guarding it. I'm a little nervous, he is very high up. But he is one of the best climbers I know.
He reaches the top safely and soon the beacon is lit. He starts to climb back down as Gandalf looks off to the next beacon. That to is lit and I clap happily.
"The beacon! The beacon of Amon Dîn is lit!" a guard shouts.
"Hope is rekindled" Gandalf states smiling. Signal beacons light in succession across several peaks. He is right, hope is rekindled.
(Rohan) Third persons POV
At Edoras, Aragorn sees the last beacon lit, and runs into the Golden Hall. "The Beacons of Minas Tirith! The Beacons are lit!" Aragorn shouts. "Gondor calls for aid" he states looking at the king.
Théoden, in council with his men, pauses and takes stock of this news. "And Rohan will answer, muster the Rohirrim" he orders. The fellowship and Rohirrim prepare, then leave for Minas Tirith together.
